    2005, Sept 21, recently had surgery in Trail BC for ruptured appendix;
At that time diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and Gout. Appendectomy surgery successful, I (hw) visited with Janet, dtr Louise and son Ronald in Grand Forks hospital this afternoon. Very weary, but feeling improved with meds for Gout.

She lost 3 of her 9 children in a house fire in 1954. I didn't inquire the details as Janet was weary and fatiqued from above illness.
Janet's current address is Box 837, Grand Forks, BC V0H 1H0; phone 250-442-3185
Dtr Louise (widowed) is currently living with her and was going to move into her own apt. when her Mom's illness happened, thus moving plans are delayed.

Received word today from Davie Easton, that his sister Janet passed away early this morning at 3:30 (in hospital in Grand Forks).
Louise, (Janet's dtr) had taken a flu bug and been ill for several days, then Janet got it, was taken to Hosp. Friday night and retd. home after 4-6 hours, then retd to hospital by 4 am, Saturday April 29. She was alert and knew her family right to the end.

    Nickname 'Jimmy"
Jimmy immigrated to Canada in 1908.(per son Dave.)
Jimmy and Janet Easton first settled in the Garden Plains area, where Jimmy had bought land for farming, as well as worked shifts in a coal mine there. (Bob Unsworth mine & Bradshaw Mines) The Coal mining area of Paintearth, Garden Plains, Tofield / Donalda area and Drumhellar Valley were all excellent sources of this fuel. Interesting enough, quite a different coal than the seams that were mined in Scotland that Grampa Dave Wilkie worked. Also of note, that when miners volunteered for War duty in WWI and WWII, at training camp, many were asked if there were any miners among them and when they (miners) stepped forward were promptly told that they were absolved of fighting a war, but must return to the mines - as the War effort required that fuel.

After a few years there, they sold and moved to Castor, where Jimmy contd. to work for Remillard mines (coal) west of Castor. As his years advanced, Jimmy found odd jobs wherever he could and was never without work.

He loved to chew snoose and he and Grampa Dave Wilkie, my father Andrew Wilkie would get together and recall Scotland with other Scottish residents in Castor, such as Haydens, Walkers. New Years was a particularly regular day of getting together to toast Auld Lang Syne. One individual would start out and then join another until they had visited each ones' home for a nip of cheer. These families friendship remained and were often enjoying one anothers hospitality via meals together, special holiday get togethers like Robbie Burns Day, birthdays, masonic lodge affairs, anniversaries, Christmas and New Years.

THE JAMES EASTON STORY - by Elechia Chidley
Source; Hanna North - A rural history 1908-1978; Compiled and published by Hanna North Book Club, edited by Jean James 1978; printed by Robins Southern Printing Ltd., 1233 - 2 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB
James or Jimmy, as he was well known, came over from Scotland in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, and took up a homestead near Corinne School. He lived with the John Wallace family and worked in the coal mine owned by T.A. Kane. Later he worked in another mine that was operated by Mr. Bradshaw.
In 1916, a lovely young Scottish lady by the name of Janet Wilkie came over from Scotland and landed in Hanna with no one there to meet her. She hired Mr. Dick Hannah to drive her to the Wallace farm to meet Jimmie, her future husband.
Having no building on his farm yet, they lived with the Wallaces for a short time, and were married a few days after she arrived in the new country that was to be her future home. I will always remember their Chivaree. While we were all banging the pans and plow shears, near me was Jimmie pounding on a dish pan, he looked around and said, "Chivaree her damn good boys."
They built a shack on their land and lived there for some time. Jimmie always worked in the mine. later they bought a quarter section North of Corinne School and lived there till they moved to Castor, where Jimmie continued to work in a coal mine till he retired and then was Night Clerk in the National Hotel for some time.
Of this marriage, there were three children: David, Janet and a baby who lived only a few years. David now lives in Red Willow near Stettler. Janet married Alex Mix, they live at Grand Forks, B.C. Janet and her husband had the misfortune to lose their home by fire, in which some of their children lost their lives.
Mr and Mrs. James Easton were a friendly couple and took part in the community affairs, he could sing the Scottish songs, which we all enjoyed very much.
Mrs. Frances Unsworth remembers when Miss Wilkie came to Canada to marry Jimmie Easton. She spent her first Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis of the Garden Plains district. Miss Wilkie had a nursing career in Scotland before coming to Canada. Her nursing profession was a great help to the people of this district.
One winter, Mr & Mrs. James Easton lived at the Three Star Mine, where she cooked for eight men and looked after her sick baby at the same time. Her husband worked in the mine. Mr. Bob Unsworth took Mrs. Easton and her sick baby to see the doctor, but the baby died in the car on the way to town. On different occasions Mrs. Easton was asked to accompany sick people on their way to see a doctor.
Mr. Easton passed away after they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Mrs. Easton moved into the Paintearth Lodge in Castor. She was noted for her handicraft which was just beautiful, doing this until her passing.

** To my knowledge, in the genealogy research, I have not found that Jennie (Janet Wilkie) had any formal nursing education, but perhaps being the youngest in her family, she helped out and had a natural love for this type of work. HWilliams

Immigrated to Canada, arriving at Garden Plains 1916
Dave (Son), thought maybe she came to Canada in 1910 and was married. NO

Moved to Castor soon after, and resided in a house one block from Main Street of Castor.

Jimmy and Jenny Easton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1960

Jenny was known for her correspondence with family back in Scotland, as well as her knitting, baking of shortbread. Jenny was always smiling, very happy woman and I recall visiting both she and Jimmy with my grandparents Dave and Annie Wilkie (Heather)

Jenny never returned to Scotland after immigrating to Canada.

Newspaper Article: Dunfermline Journal January 30 1926 pg 5
    TWO CROSSGATES PEOPLE INJURED:
Two accidents involving injuries to two persons resident in Crossgates occurred last Saturday. In the early morning while an old residenter named Andrew Wilkie, Main Street, was procedding to Inverkeithing, he was knocked down by a motor car and sustained injuries to his head. He was removed home and medically attended to.***
Another accident with more serious results occurred in the evening. Thomas Sneddon, who is employed by the Co-operative Society at Dunfermline and who resides with his parents in Dunfermline Road, was proceeding home on the top of a train car from Dunfermline, when at a part of the road, hear the West of Fife Laundry, he was struck on the head by the trolley. After medical aid had been summoned, he was removed to Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital suffering from head injuries.
    ****
It seems Gt Grandfather Andrew never recovered from his accident and within 2 weeks was hospitalized and died. I have been told he was walking to the Fair or Garden Fair at Inverkeithing as he was going to judge some of the competitions, but unfortunately the plan never came to fruition due to the accident.

I wonder if there were charges to the driver of the motor vehicle or was Gt Grampa in the wrong place at the wrong time. hw
