  1. 10.  Robert Wilkie was born about 1844 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland (son of William Dick Wilkie and Margaret Fraser); died on 21 Sep 1895 in Greytown, Otago, New Zealand.

    Registrar: John Swan

Have searched again (Jan 2011) for a census location 1861 for Robert Wilkie - as in 1865 he is 21 and marrying Elizabeth Mitchell - wonder how the Robert & Elizabeth met - presumably in the area as marriage cert. states Robert a ploughman and Elizabeth a bleacher.

    1871 Scotland Census: Reg # 440, Line 22, Roll CSSCT1871_75, Household #70

Elizabeth Mitchell, Female, Wife, Married, Age 26
Andrew Wilkie, Male, Son, Age 3
Elizabeth Wilkie, Female, Dtr, Age 7 mos

Robert & Elizabeth moved to London England as Daughter Elizabeth married a William Ayres in 1889 ( Bride was 19 & Groom 21) Again - questions - how did Elizabeth meet her bridegroom? are there family connections in someway that are introducing the younger generation to one another????? One connection would be John Robert Wilkie & Barbara Hay's family. John died in 1854 thus prior to 1861 census - would family attend one another's funerals in those days (seems very unlikely) - seemed so very little time between death and burials and a lengthy distance to travel.

Large gap here, as when did Robert sail for New Zealand. Did Elizabeth accompany him?

Certainly there seems to be a little discrepancy in the ages and birth dates as I know them, but then this did happen on passenger lists and other databases - so for the moment this checks out. I wonder, though, why Janet left earlier and was married in New Zealand, then also Son James - seems he was perhaps married there also - why did they leave earlier. I also wonder if all of these families or just some were sponsored by the govt to migrate to New Zealand????? HW Jan 2011

No mention of his wife Elizabeth. Did she remain in England, return to Scotland or accompany him to New Zealand - but it seems on a timeline that Robert left England sometime after 1889 and journied to New Zealand - dying there in 1895.

Elizabeth's trail goes cold in England as I cannot find anymore info. hw 2010

I have tried ancestry.ca, findmypast, Free BMD New Zealand and cemeteries, and Otago Witness newspaper for more info on Robert & Elizabeth but cannot find anything new. There are some Mitchells and Wilkies, seemingly tog in Dunedin cemeteries, but tis a Margaret Mitchell not an Elizabeth - so rather and unlikely fit at this time HW Jan 2011

A possiblitity that this person may be Robert Wilkie's wife - Elizabeth (Mitchell) Wilkie
