Upon returning to Canada he worked in coal mines in the Garden Plains area - along with his Brother in Law Jimmy Easton. The owners of those mines were Bob Unsworth and Bradshaw Mines. Later he worked for Remillard Mines - by Halkirk area - the location where Grampa suffered his eye injury due to dynamite that didn't ignite immediately but sometime later, 'blew', injuring Grampa in the face - forcing him to have many months of care in Calgary and Castor Hospitals - resulting in his glass eye.

I am uncertain of the exact date, but when Grampa Dave was working for Remillard mines either in the late 1930s or early 1940s, dynamite was lit and everyone had cleared the respective area for the explosion to occur; nothing happened - several miners went up a ladder to check why - and then it was Grampa's turn to check as the expected explosion hadn't occurred. Just as he reached the area - the explosion occurred - resulting in serious injuries to him - the loss of his Left eye as well as pieces of coal debris embedded in his skin - which remained for the remainder of his life - there was no way of removing this without serious skin grafting - neither expertise nor money was available for this option. To complicate matters further, there was no insurance for the workers in these small mines and no compensation when accidents happened. Grampa was taken to the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary for treatments and a glass eye prosthesis. This exhausted his savings account and his Son Andy (my Dad) helped with the expenses. From that time onward, Grampa had a glass eye prosthesis - and again technology wasn't what it is today. The special type of glass used to come from Germany but during and after WWII, laboratories used another form of glass / plastics. It was not easy to insert the prosthesis into the orbit, cleanliness was required, both to the orbital cavity, the prosthesis as was lubrication. In the 21st century it is thought the life expectancy of a glass eye prosthesis is about 5 yrs - I wonder what it was back in the 1940s. Grampa never received any replacements - but used the first and only one he was given. He and our Father never returned to working in the mines following this accident.

Grampa found work in the local Pool Hall, working the tables, selling snacks and beverages as well as the cleaning of the establishment. He put in long hours - often 12 hour shifts on weekends & holidays - then a half-mile walk home after closing. Grampa never owned a car or drove a vehicle.

Anne's first arrival was in September 1912 - to Nova Scotia to join her husband Dave - working in the Springhill Mines
I'm not sure of all the details but a combination of their Daughter Nettie's (Janet) poor health and perhaps Anne's homesickness, the miners Strike in Springhill - a decision was made to return to Scotland in April 1914
Shortly after arriving back 'home' War broke out, Grampa was mining once again as well as loading the ships coming to the Firth of Forth. Conditions were not better at 'home' like Anne had remembered or hoped - Grampa was very unhappy here and couldn't wait to return to Canada. In the meantime, Grampa Dave's Sister - Jennie (Janet) had migrated to Canada - to Alberta - Garden Plains District. - married James (Jim) Easton
Eventually Anne, Dave, Nettie & Andrew returned to Canada - to Garden Plains and shortly afterwards Castor. Grampa came early in 1920 but Gramma was unable to join him until October of 1920, aboard the ship Pretoria
While Grampa Dave was enroute back to Canada, their 3rd child - Son John died of whooping cough

Newspaper Article: Dunfermline Journal January 30 1926 pg 5
    TWO CROSSGATES PEOPLE INJURED:
Two accidents involving injuries to two persons resident in Crossgates occurred last Saturday. In the early morning while an old residenter named Andrew Wilkie, Main Street, was procedding to Inverkeithing, he was knocked down by a motor car and sustained injuries to his head. He was removed home and medically attended to.***
Another accident with more serious results occurred in the evening. Thomas Sneddon, who is employed by the Co-operative Society at Dunfermline and who resides with his parents in Dunfermline Road, was proceeding home on the top of a train car from Dunfermline, when at a part of the road, hear the West of Fife Laundry, he was struck on the head by the trolley. After medical aid had been summoned, he was removed to Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital suffering from head injuries.
    ****
It seems Gt Grandfather Andrew never recovered from his accident and within 2 weeks was hospitalized and died. I have been told he was walking to the Fair or Garden Fair at Inverkeithing as he was going to judge some of the competitions, but unfortunately the plan never came to fruition due to the accident.

I wonder if there were charges to the driver of the motor vehicle or was Gt Grampa in the wrong place at the wrong time. hw
