159 | Correspondence with Margot Manning - Edinburgh Scotland May 30 2017 Michael & Margaret were both born in Ireland - one and perhaps both from County Clare. Relatives thought they were from Cork but Census records say Clare , although I (Margot) strongly suspect that the Mannings wee actually from Cork. Margaret's surname was O'Bryan and not Bryant, but it was the Mannings who gave me most trouble. Not sure if my Aunts were able to trace their own birth certificates. My Father was registered as William Mannan but had it rectiied later. Michael and Margaret were married in Perth in 1859 - Margaret's parents were Patrick O'Bryan and Bridget Gilligan. Michael's parents were William Manning and Bridget Doherty Michael and Margaret were Irish speakers but illiterate. They were probably potatoe famine emigrants. Mary appears to have been registered as Mannon and was older than stated on her marriage certificate. That is very common. My Great-grandmother on my Mother's side got younger every census. As a child; we were the only Mannings in Perthshire. There are others now but they are not related to us as far as I know. I was raised in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. We frequently visited Auchterarder as we had an Uncle and 2 Aunts in the area nearby All I knew about Mary, she lived in Sterling. I didn't know her married name so I couldn't find out any more. By the way, I suspect that the name of the witness should be Faichney. | Manning, Michael (I1234)

160 | Corresponding with a descendant of David Johnston Wilkie in April 2010 via ancestry.ca. I found much of her material based on a collaboration of researchers on ancestry and not all of the data was verified, thus errors occurred. Elspeth Hutchinson & husb John had Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul's parents different than John Wilkie & Janet Stevenson, & likewise for Christian Paul. I shared with her my OPR births, deaths and the data on Elizabeth Wilkie and slowly we are correcting poor connections. For David Johnston, there are still many unanswered questions. Where did he go in Scotland after his Mother's death in 1834? It seems by 1841, a Brother John had moved to London, marrying a Barbara Hay and establishing his family there. David Johnston is recorded on the 1841 Scotland Census residing with Wm & Mary Wilson family (unknown to me as far as relations are concerned) - the Head of the family Wm Wilson is a shoe manager/ maker; David is age 15, and apprenticing in the shoe making business. No real proof at this point that this is our David Wilkie tho. as no Johnston name after the David 1851 England Census: St Giles Cripplegate, Middlesex, England David Wilkie is located at an establishment, apprenticing or working as a Baker. There are other lads from Scotland as well as other parts of the UK. David is Age 25 yrs 1852 - David Wilkie marries Eliza Rogers, the marriage taking place at Westminster, London, England (close to where his Brother John & Barbara ( Hay) Wilkie are living. Occupation was a ploughman and a carter, & in 1901 (at Son David's wedding ) noted as Colliery Labourer Newspaper Article: Dunfermline Journal January 30 1926 pg 5 TWO CROSSGATES PEOPLE INJURED: Two accidents involving injuries to two persons resident in Crossgates occurred last Saturday. In the early morning while an old residenter named Andrew Wilkie, Main Street, was procedding to Inverkeithing, he was knocked down by a motor car and sustained injuries to his head. He was removed home and medically attended to.*** Another accident with more serious results occurred in the evening. Thomas Sneddon, who is employed by the Co-operative Society at Dunfermline and who resides with his parents in Dunfermline Road, was proceeding home on the top of a train car from Dunfermline, when at a part of the road, hear the West of Fife Laundry, he was struck on the head by the trolley. After medical aid had been summoned, he was removed to Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital suffering from head injuries. **** It seems Gt Grandfather Andrew never recovered from his accident and within 2 weeks was hospitalized and died. I have been told he was walking to the Fair or Garden Fair at Inverkeithing as he was going to judge some of the competitions, but unfortunately the plan never came to fruition due to the accident. I wonder if there were charges to the driver of the motor vehicle or was Gt Grampa in the wrong place at the wrong time. hw Death Certificate - Andrew Wilkie 1926-422-5 Page 2 Andrew Wilkie, labourer, 73 years, wife of Janet Brown, died February 2, 1926, 12 noon Parents: Charlie Wilkie, shepherd; Agnes Paton Andrew died as a result of a motor vehicle accident on mainstreet Crossgates, Dalgetty. 194 | I have been searching for more info on Duncan Slaght, wife Raceinia - Tillsonburg and District Historical society states Duncan's birth as 18 Aug 1846 ( I had noted abt 1845) and his death 08 Oct 1867 - so will use this as my source for now. The Tillsonburg and District Historical Society had done a huge project on Pioneer Cemetery, the residents that were buried there, further info etc - have erected a large plaque in honour of many graves that have disappeared over the years. hw 2017 For now I have accepted their research from their records for Duncan's birth and death dates, but I also have Duncan's brother Cyrenius' birth as 18 Aug 1846 - were they twins???? hw Further research reveals the1851 Canadian census recording Cyrenius Slaght as age 8 and Duncan as age 6, thus unlikely they are twins - placing Cyrenius' birth abt 1844 and Duncan's 1845/46 hw | Slaght, Duncan (I1273)

195 | James (Jim) was born on the farm, East of Blackfalds (Tees) on Dec 19 1922, during a blizzard - to Parents Robert & Mary McKay. He grew upon the farm with his Sister Ava and Brother Bert. Jim was a quiet mischievous youngster playing pranks on hisolder Sister Ava and his Mother during his school days. His Father, Robert died suddenly of a stroke in 1932. His Mother remarried Bill McEwan in 1936 and his younger Sister Marjorie and Brother John were born. Jim contd his pranks and torture on his little sister as well. Jim farmed with his Brother Bert for a number of years West of Blackfalds. then in 1954, he met a cute nursing student at church and invited her to a weiner roast after the service. Thus began a four hyear long courtship while she took her nursing and then he (Jim) and Islay Mae Weeks were married. Islay & Jim started farming one mile North of Tees until 1971, when they sold the Farm and moved to India. There they followed a religious settlement and a guru of sorts. They returned to Canada in 1977 and settled in Red Deer, Alberta. Jim worked at various jobs of which the last and longest was as the building superintendant for the Parkland Savings and Credit Union. He retired in 1994 after which he enjoyed life with his Wife; they took various trips - Australia, New Zealand, Cruise to Mexico, and a couple of trips to Alaska as well as up the McKenzie River on a riverboat to Norman Wells.
