Patrick died WWI in Aug 1918 - info needs to be verified hw; now verified 2019 hw Family research states Patrick was born Medbury Canterbury, New Zealand 1888 He departed New Zealand 31 Dec 2017 Died 23 Aug 1918 of wounds WWI France Commonwealth War Graves: Butler, Patrick - Trooper Service Number 65201 Died 23 Aug 1918 - Age 30 years Otago Mounted Rifles, N.Z.E.F. Burial: Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme France Franvillers is a village & district in the Department of the Somme, and stands on high ground above the River Ancre. It is 19 kms from Amiens and 10 kms from Albert on the D929 road. The Communal Cemetery & Extension are south-east of the village on C201 road The Communal Cemetery was used at intervals from May 1916 - May 1918. The adjoining Extension was used from April to August 1918 by units and field ambulances engaged in the defence of Amiens. Casualty details: UK 113, Australia 134, New Zealand 1, Germany 5 for a total of 253. Further military research has revealed a military file for both brothers - Patrick Butler born 1888 and Richard Butler born 1892. Patrick was a police constable in Dunedin prior to enlisting for WWI and Richard was employed as a bank clerk in Union Bank Christchurch New Zealand. Richard died of influenza Disease in France 14 Dec 2017 - military file states he was buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery Patrick died of battle wounds suffered in combat with A Company 33 - gun shot wounds to R arm and a fractured Left leg. Buried in Franvillers Cemetery, Location Somme France.
