Carpenter / died / Feb. 7, 1902 / aged 67 yr, 7 mos & 23 days Source: Tillsonburg Cemetery Transcriptions Photo of grave/monument taken by Heather Williams Tilsonburg Liberal Newspaper, Thursday, Feb. 13, 1902 Double Bereavement, Father and Son Pass Away very Suddenly Mr. Stanton B. W. Carpenter, almost the last of the early settlers of Tilsonburg, succumbed on Friday last to an attack of pneumonia. He had been in his usual health until the week previous to his death. His son, Edwin W. Carpenter, who had been looking after his father during his illness, contracted a cold on Friday, which at once assumed a very serious aspect. Pneumonia followed, and all that careful nursing and skillful physicians could do proved of no avail, death ensuing late on Tuesday evening. Mr. Carpenter ahd been a resident of Tilsonburg since April, 1855 and has lived here continuously ever since with the exxception of one year spent in Michigan. He was born in Herkimer county, New York. He worked for the late Mr. E. D. Tillson for over 21 years, and since that time has been in the furniture and undertaking business and for many years had the largest business of the kind in this part of the province. He was married in 1856 to Miss C. Weeks, and they raised one son and one daughter to manhood and womanhood, the daugher having preceded him to the other world a few years ago, and now the son follows him after only a few days. Mr. Carpenter was in business with his brother - in-law, the late Wm. Kimpton, some years in the furniture and undertaking business and has spent most of his life in that business. His reputation as an undertaker was of the very highest order, and he had a wide range of country for his field, as he was called to all parts to bury the dead, but the cold hand of death reached out after him, and other hands have laid him away in the grave in the same way he had for others hundreds and hundreds of times. He never was in public office, but he was always outspoken in matters of public concern, and was generous hearted and loyal to his adopted town. Deceased was a charter member of Dufferin Tent No. 30 of the Maccabees and was commander of the Tent for several years, and carried a policy in the order for $2000.00 The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. J. J. Brown of Avondale Presbyterian church. There was a very large attendance of relatives and friends and Maccabees, and several beautiful wreaths and bouquests adorned the casket, one wreath being from the local Maccabee Tent. The following members of the society acted as pall bearers: John McIntyre, W. McGuire, J. O. Fluelling, John Barnard, S. E. Wilcox, and G. Berriault. | Carpenter, Stanton B. W. (I262)

I believe Scott, William was Dave Wilkies' wifes' (Annie Scott Wilkie) brother. Grampa Dave Wilkie worked in the coal mines of Crossgates, Dunfermline area Fife, Scotland, then in Glace Bay & New Waterton areas of Nova Scotia when he first migrated to Canada. Upon returning to Scotland - WWI was declared and again Grampa Dave was employed in coaling or fueling the warships at the naval base as well as working in the coal mines. The owners of those mines were Bob Unsworth and Bradshaw Mines. Later he worked for Remillard Mines - by Halkirk area - the location where Grampa suffered his eye injury due to dynamite that didn't ignite immediately but sometime later, 'blew', injuring Grampa in the face - forcing him to have many months of care in Calgary and Castor Hospitals - resulting in his glass eye. I am uncertain of the exact date, but when Grampa Dave was working for Remillard mines either in the late 1930s or early 1940s, dynamite was lit and everyone had cleared the respective area for the explosion to occur; nothing happened - several miners went up a ladder to check why - and then it was Grampa's turn to check as the expected explosion hadn't occurred. Just as he reached the area - the explosion occurred - resulting in serious injuries to him - the loss of his Left eye as well as pieces of coal debris embedded in his skin - which remained for the remainder of his life - there was no way of removing this without serious skin grafting - neither expertise nor money was available for this option. To complicate matters further, there was no insurance for the workers in these small mines and no compensation when accidents happened. Grampa was taken to the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary for treatments and a glass eye prosthesis. This exhausted his savings account and his Son Andy (my Dad) helped with the expenses. From that time onward, Grampa had a glass eye prosthesis - and again technology wasn't what it is today. The special type of glass used to come from Germany but during and after WWII, laboratories used another form of glass / plastics. It was not easy to insert the prosthesis into the orbit, cleanliness was required, both to the orbital cavity, the prosthesis as was lubrication. In the 21st century it is thought the life expectancy of a glass eye prosthesis is about 5 yrs - I wonder what it was back in the 1940s. Grampa never received any replacements - but used the first and only one he was given. He and our Father never returned to working in the mines following this accident. Grampa found work in the local Pool Hall, working the tables, selling snacks and beverages as well as the cleaning of the establishment. He put in long hours - often 12 hour shifts on weekends & holidays - then a half-mile walk home after closing. Grampa never owned a car or drove a vehicle.
