Quotes from Lillian Bowdery, Barrie Ont.
" Some of this family didn't like the spelling and changed it to simply OROK, yet others kept the original spelling. Robert & Janet farmed in the village of MIdhurst, just North of the city of Barrie. One of the descendants, Dr. Orock, was a Doctor on some of the ships on the Great Lakes. I'm not sure of the occupation of the others. The person who is following this branch is in the early stages of her research and I don't know if she has a computer. The info following was taken from "The History of MIdhurst" and I think Dr. Orok was interviewed for this. He had retired to the family farm in Midhurst. He built a lovely log house and his den was filled with wild animal pelts on the floors and mounted heads on the walls. He was a unique character.

One year after the home farm was divided (1875), Joseph Weeks (who was born two years after his parents had moved from the Kern Settlement near Forestville, March 27, 1834), built a new modern home on his land, and was married on September 27, 1876 to Rosa Armenta Clark, and brought her as his bride to his new home.

Joseph was a very hard working man, yet was always known to have the time to aid anyone who needed help.

To this union of Joseph Weeks and Armenta (Aunt Minty as she was known to most people) were born 2 sons. William Nelson b May 6, 1879; Lewis Delmer b July 5, 1881.

One morning Joseph was going to help his brother Walter ( a distance of about 5 miles) to clear his farm, he met on Vienna Hill as we know it, which was at that time a mere footpath, a wildcat. Joseph with an axe over his shoulder stopped - so did the wildcat, - each staring at the other until finally the wildcat moved off and Joseph continued on his way.

More notes from Ostrander Women's Institute Book
" There was very little money in those days, but little was needed as all traded their surplus and their work. Work was done by bees - friends, relatives and neighbours would gather at dawn to build a house or raise a barn, and the women would cook and bake to feed these hungry men - and despite the work involved, they were very happy gatherings. Their work was very labourious - done with only an axe and adze at first, later by hand saws and later still by cross-cut saws. Whenever or whatever there was a need - helping hands were always ready.
In those early times doctors were few and far between, so mother took over in the time of illness, and usually someone in the neighbourhood with a special knack in caring for the sick would be on call whenever needed. The doctor was seldom called except in cases of serious illness. For the most part they were a hearty , healthy people.
Water was a very precious and needed commodity, and wells were detected by 'witching'. Fire was a dreaded enemy if uncontrolled - yet wood was the only fuel used in both cook stoves and huge cast iron heaters. Large pieces of wood were put in the stoves to hold heat and fire throughout the night.

# 19 Highway, there was an old school buidling, now (2004) being used for a church. This building was built after the one room school house out grew its usefulness abt 1950s. Margaret Rouse's sister, Grace Hart taught at this school in the early fifties. Grace taught Grades 1-8 here, her first school that she taught was Wateford, North of Simcoe.

It is thought the school south of Ostrander a mile, may have been the school where Charity and Rhoda attended.

Marion Allen Drysdale made numerous trips back and forth to Scotland - however the first trip I see her in United States America is aboard Aquitania, sailing from Liverpool 17 Jul 1920 to New York on 24 Jul 1920
Marion Wilkie, Age 41, Female, Housewife, Yes to read and write, Last permanent address was Cowdenbeath, Next of Kin is Father Thos. Drysdale of 31 Arthur St Cowdenbeath Final destination Salineville, Ohio She is accompanied by her family:
Wilkie, David, Age 21, Male, Single, Coal miner, and Next of Kin - noted as Grandfather - Thos Drysdale of Cowdenbeath
Wilkie, Robina, Age 16, Female, Machine knitter, Single - 'Deaf & dumb' in one column

Wilkie, Catherine Age 9, Female, Single, Scholar

Passenger Lists:
Marion Wilkie, Age 41, accompanied by James & Catherine Wilkie departed Southampton England on 13 Nov 1920, arriving New York on 20 Nov 1920. It is possible that Marion took her family back to Cowdenbeath, Fife at this time, leaving her daughter Robina (disability of deaf & dumb) and then retd to Salineville Ohio in November. perhaps Robina couldn't adjust to Ohio, ??? - wish I knew a family member to hear some family stories. As I notice several more trips back to Scotland by Marion - obviously for family reasons - and perhaps most importantly her daughter Robina - however, I gasp at the cost of those trips.
