John George Klaus was born on December 14, 1915 in Norka, Russia. When John was 9 years old, he and his family emigrated from Russia to Canada and settled in Stony Plain, Alberta. They lived there for only a very short time before moving to Alliance, Alberta where John attended the Beaver School. John loved to play hardball and his favorite position was catcher. After leaving school, he continued to farm with his family. He later met Martha Engel, and they were married on April 4, 1940. They began their married life together on a rented farm North of Castor, In 1943 they bought a farm 6 miles East of Castor where they were involved in both grain farming and cattle production. They were also active members of the church. They remained on the farm until 1969 when they moved to Castor, buth they still continued farming.
In 1973 their son Gordon and his wife Sandi started farming as well, and the four of them farmed together for many years. In 1999 John became a resident of Our Lady of Rosary Hospital (Extendicare). He remained interested in the activities of the farm and greatly enjoyed his visits there, as well as spending time with his family.
Predeceased by his parents John & Annie, granddaughter Lisa Klaus, brother Harry and sister Lena, John is survived by his loving family; wife Martha, sons Gordon (Sandi) Klaus of Castor, Robert (Christine) Klaus of Kelowna, B.C., daughter Marilyn (Barry) Thomson of Red Deer, 7 grandchildren Jason Klaus of Castor, Monica Klaus of Stettler, Nicole Thomson of Calgary, and Matthew Tomson of Red Deer, Allan Slemp, Kelly (Clyde) Robinson, and Randy Slemp of Edmonton; 2 step grandchildren Rael and Sheryl of Vancouver B.C., as well as 7 great grandchildren; 2 brothers Conrad (Edna) Klaus of Camrose, and Leo Klaus of Calgary, 2 sisters Margaret Klaus of Calgary and Mollie (Allen) Wilkie of Kingston, Ont.; special family member Lydia Steinwand, numerous other family and host of many friends.
Mr. John George Klaus passes away in Our Lady of Rosary Hospital, Castor, AB on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the age of 87 years.
