Certainly there seems to be a little discrepancy in the ages and birth dates as I know them, but then this did happen on passenger lists and other databases - so for the moment this checks out. I wonder, though, why Janet left earlier and was married in New Zealand, then also Son James - seems he was perhaps married there also - why did they leave earlier. I also wonder if all of these families or just some were sponsored by the govt to migrate to New Zealand????? HW Jan 2011
"A Notable Event"
Mr and Mrs William Wilkie of Greytown, East Taieri, celebrated their golden wedding with great rejoicings on the 18th inst. at the residence of their Son in Law, Mr John Sinclair, Cargill Street, Dunedin. Mr & Mrs Wilkie have borne the burden and heat of the day for 50 years, and they are still as hale and hearty as can be expected at their time of life. They are natives of Leslie, Fifeshire, Scotland and had five sons and three daughters, 24 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, all of whom, with the exception of one daughter, who is in Leslie, Fifeshire, took part in these festivities. Mrs James C. Renton, George Street, is a Daughter, and her daughters Maggie & Bella, together with Misses Mary & Agnes Sinclair, (also grand-daughters) of the worthy couple) officiated as the golden bridesmaids. This is the second occasion on which the little Renton girls have acted in this capacity, they having been in evidence at Grandmother Renton's Golden wedding 18 mos ago. It is a unique experience, and these young people rejoice in the possession of grandparents on both sides who are in the enjoyment of excellent health, and who united ages, it is worth mentioning, amount to 303 years. At the close of a day full of happiness the golden bride was presented by her relatives and friends with a purse of sovereigns.

Have searched again (Jan 2011) for a census location 1861 for Robert Wilkie - as in 1865 he is 21 and marrying Elizabeth Mitchell - wonder how the Robert & Elizabeth met - presumably in the area as marriage cert. states Robert a ploughman and Elizabeth a bleacher.

Robert & Elizabeth moved to London England as Daughter Elizabeth married a William Ayres in 1889 ( Bride was 19 & Groom 21) Again - questions - how did Elizabeth meet her bridegroom? are there family connections in someway that are introducing the younger generation to one another????? One connection would be John Robert Wilkie & Barbara Hay's family. John died in 1854 thus prior to 1861 census - would family attend one another's funerals in those days (seems very unlikely) - seemed so very little time between death and burials and a lengthy distance to travel.
Large gap here, as when did Robert sail for New Zealand. Did Elizabeth accompany him?

Wilkie: on the 21st September 1895 at his residence, Greytown South, Robert Wilkie; aged 51 years. Deeply regretted
No mention of his wife Elizabeth. Did she remain in England, return to Scotland or accompany him to New Zealand - but it seems on a timeline that Robert left England sometime after 1889 and journied to New Zealand - dying there in 1895.

I believe this Family to be William Dick Wilkie, Son of Robert & Christian (Paul) Wilkie - will cont. research hoping to find a death, as not on 1881 Census. These names are indicative of naming patterns in Robert & Christian 's family. In 2010, contact with relatives in Dunedin, via ancestry.ca - confirming William Dick Wilkie was Son of Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul, married to Margaret Fraser.

This information along with family data from William Dick Wilkie & Margaret Fraser, I am saying as an educated guess, this is William Dick Wilkie & Margaret (Fraser) Wilkie's Daughter Janet Wilkie, and her family.
Death states 58 years in New Zealand, thus placing emigration around 1870, but Janet was clearly in Scotland in 1871, but again the timing is very close.

I have found a 1911 census that looks promising to be that of William Ayres & wife Elizabeth and a large family
William Ayres, Head, Age 42, Married, 9 chn born, 8 living, 1 died, General Labourer, builder, Worker, born London Westminster, British
Elizabeth Ayres, Wife, Age 41, Married x 22 yrs, birthplace St Pancras, London**
William Ayres, Son, Age 21, Single, Drapers Porter, worker, birthplace Marylebone, London
Elizabeth Ayres, Dtr, Age 19, Single, Domestic Servant, birthplace London
John Ayres, Son, Age 17, Single, Errand boy, birthplace London
Henry Ayres, Son, Age 16, Single, Errand boy, birthplace London
Albert Ayres, Son, Age 9, Single, School, birthplace London
Doris Ayres, Dtr, Age 6, School, birthplace London
Leonard Ayres, Son, Age 4, School, birthplace London
Frederick Ayres, Son, Age 2, birthplace London
This census info jives with the marriage information I have, so sheds doubt and accuracy on death date of Wm Ayres 1902 and obviously not a Son either as the 1891 census - Son William was 1, thus jives with the Son here whose age is 21. HW Jan 2011 Further corresonpondence with a Noble family researcher whose wife's Parents were the youngest son Frederick of William Ayres & Elizabeth Wilkie.
The naming pattern is consistent with John being William Ayres`s father`s name, Elizabeth for her Mother`s name; missing is a Robert but according to the census info, one child died. Jan 2011 HW
Still trying to verify 1911 census - cannot find a William & Elizabeth Ayres in 1901, there are multiple William Ayres and Eliz. combinations so difficult to rule out 'no's and find the right one without something further to go on - like why does Elizabeth (Wilkie) Ayres both on her marriage and 1891 census give her birthplace as London England??? Her family and grandparents were aboard the ship Auckland to New Zealand in 1874 - how / when did they return to England??Her Sister Margaret was born in Kinglassie December 1872 thus the family moved to England after that HW Feb 2011

HW Jan 2011

This is the area where Robert & Elizabeth Wilkie were living - East Taieri - and Robert was a farm labourer. Mar 2019 hw

I think the use of the Mitchell surname - strong possibility these are related to Robert Wilkie & Eliz. Mitchell. That the Christina Wilkie is possibly Christina Brown who married a James Wilkie with Reg. # 1900/4232
I strongly think this is one of 'our' James Wilkie, Son of Robert Wilkie & Elizabeth Mitchell - who journeyed to New Zealand with Robert's Parents - William Dick Wilkie & Margaret Fraser and Robert Wilkie's siblings
James Wilkie's wife being Christina Brown (NZ Marriage Index)
However Christina Wilkie's Probate Will - gives some information that seems relevant, but requires more researching to verify

History Information
Bailleul was occupied on 14 October 1914 by the 19th Brigade and the 4th Division. It became an important railhead, air depot and hospital centre, with the 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 11th, 53rd, 1st Canadian and 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Stations quartered in it for considerable periods. It was a Corps headquarters until July 1917, when it was severely bombed and shelled, and after the Battle of Bailleul (13-15 April 1918), it fell into German hands and was not retaken until 30 August 1918. The earliest Commonwealth burials at Bailleul were made at the east end of the communal cemetery and in April 1915, when the space available had been filled, the extension was opened on the east side of the cemetery. The extension was used until April 1918, and again in September, and after the Armistice graves were brought in from the neighbouring battlefields and the following burial grounds:- PONT-DE-NIEPPE GERMAN CEMETERY, on the South side of the hamlet of Pont-de-Nieppe, made in the summer of 1918. It contained German graves (now removed) and those of a soldier and an airman from the United Kingdom. RENINGHELST CHINESE CEMETERY, in a field a little South of the Poperinghe-Brandhoek road, where 30 men of the Chinese Labour Corps were buried in November 1917-March 1918. BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY contains 610 Commonwealth burials of the First World War; 17 of the graves were destroyed by shell fire and are represented by special memorials. BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION contains 4,403 Commonwealth burials of the First World War; 11 of the graves made in April 1918 were destroyed by shell fire and are represented by special memorials. There are also 17 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and 154 German burials from both wars. Both the Commonwealth plot in the communal cemetery and the extension were designed by Sir Herbert Baker. In the centre of the town is a stone obelisk erected by the 25th Division as their Memorial on the Western front, recalling particularly the beginning of their war service at Bailleul and their part in the Battle of Messines. The town War Memorial, a copy of the ruined tower and belfry of the Church of St. Vaast, was unveiled in 1925 by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, the City which had "adopted" Bailleul.44. I am not certain that the John Lamb Wilkie - & family names connecting to him in Electoral Rolls are our relatives. In further researching of electoral rolls, I believe the Robert Alexander Wilkie that is located in Oamaru, Ashburton, Canterbury areas is our relative. The other names associated with him are his Sister and there is one marriage recorded to Nea Presland - for the moment, I shall go forward with this choice and consider it a 'guess' based on some facts.
