Charity Kern was of German descent. Her grandfather, Christopher Kern, settled in German Valley,Roxbury Twp., Morris Cty, New Jersey. See Kern Genealogy Page for continuation. He had 3 sons: David, Christopher, and John, 1 daughter Anna. In 1799 David got the urge to move to Upper Canada and settled near Hamilton.
Charity's father, JOHN KERN,was born at Roxbury Twp, Morris Cty, New Jersey on 29 May 1763, died at Charlotteville Twp on 11 Jan. 1824 at the age of 65 y, 10 m 10d. John married CHARITY BUNN,( born at Roxbury Twp in Jun/Jul 1769) on April 9, 1787 in New Jersey. Charity (Bunn)Kern died in Charlotteville on April 9, 1854 age 84 years, 9 m. Both John and Charity are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Forestville, Charlotteville Twp.
In 1800, the others (Christopher, John, their families) decided to make the journey also. They 'brought horses, cows, sheep, pigs and poultry, and all their household effects with them, and it took six weeks to complete the journey. ' Also in this party was John's uncle and aunt Adam and Anna (Swackhammer) Lick/Leek and Adam's son-in-law John Youngs. Adam Leek and Christopher Kern moved onto Oxford Cty.
On 12 Aug 1800, John Kern purchased from Richard Cockrell Lot 1, Conc1, Lot 2, Conc 4 and the north half of Lot 3, conc3, Walsingham Twp. According to family tradition recounted by Norfolk Cty historian E.A. Owen, John Kern felt swindled in this purchase. " John Kern brought $500. in cash with him. It was all he had, and he intended to purchase a home with it, but when he arrived at Niagara a land shark met him and enduced him to buy five hundred acres of land at a dollar per acre, which was represented as being of good quality and very desirable in every respect. Mr Kern exchanged his capital for a deed of the land and when he arrived in Long Point settlement, he made the sickening discovery that his land was absolutely worthless. This meant privation and pinching destitution for a few years"
John's occupation was a blacksmith. His faith was Presbyterian. John was appointed town clerk on June 10, 1806 of the township Charlotteville, by the court of Sessions.
John leased from the Crown Reserve, Lot 9, Con 1 Charlotteville Twp on !3 Sept 1802.
Kern purchased from Teeple 106 acres in Lot 9 Con A on 14 Mar 1804. Kern made his homestead on the rear part of this purchase, near the present village of Forestville.
1808 - 20 Sept, John purchased another 10 acres from Teeple
22 Sept 1810, John bought from Oliver Mabee 40 acres in Lot 9 Con A. To this he added 50 acres from John Lodor in Lot 8 Con A on 20 May 1811.
John served during the war of 1812 in Mitchell's Company of the Norfolk Cty Militia.
This family was brought up to work. The girls worked in the fields, drove oxen and did whatever was needed inside and outside.

I wonder about Rhoda's Father - Joseph Weeks and his will. Joseph Weeks died in 1878, and as Rhoda was still alive but she is not mentioned in the Will at all - is this Usual??? hw

3. I wonder about the origin of her christian names, Rhoda, doesn't seem to fit with Charity Kern's side - is it possible that was Amos Weeks' wife's name? What name is the initial A. meant to be? hw

4. Haven't found a death entry for her either. Slaght researchers say she was mentioned on the grave marker for her husband Silas Slaght, but when I visited the cemetery (Pioneer Cemetery, Tillsonburg), couldn't trace the inscription at all. hw

Death of John Weeks (Obituary)

The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. John Weeks of Middleton, an aged reseident and pioneer and a gentleman well known and very highly respected throughout this section. Some time ago, while working in the woods, the deceased received a slight scratch on the right wrist, Nothing was thought of it until the Sunday previous to his death, when he became ill and the arm began to swell. Blood poisoning, ensued which resulted in death a week later.
Mr Weeks was 71 years old the Saturday previous to his death. He was the son of the late Joseph Weeks of Dereham and was the eldest of a family of seven boys. He was born in Charlotteville. Over sixty years ago he came with his father to the old homestead on the 9th concession of Dereham, the road in to the wood farm being followed by blazed trees. Forty-six years ago he married Miss Adeliza James, whose father lived on the adjoining farm. After their marriage they settled on the farm in Middleton where Mr. Weeks resided until his death. Twelve years ago his wife died and he afterwards married Mrs. Nicholas Stillwell of Eden, who survives him. The deceased was a Conservative in politics and had been a member of the Methodist Church 23 years.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and was very largely attended. The services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Brethour assisted by the Revs. Cuthbert and Weaver of Eden. The pallbearers were Amos, Joseph, Walter and Isaac Weeks, brothers of the deceased, and Ransom and Andrew Weeks, nephews. The interment was made at the town cemetery.
The following from the members of the Trustee Board of the Methodist Church was read by Dr. Brethour at the funeral.
Resolutions of Condolence
We the members of the Trustee Board and of the Quarterly Official Board of the Methodist Church, Tillsonburg were deeply pained on hearing of the decease of our late brother and fellow worker, John Weeks.
He had gone in and out amongst us as a member of the Church for twenty-three years, and for twenty-two years he has been an interested, active and faithful worker on the Trustee Board of our Church. He was always present at the Board meetings when it was possible to be there. His matured and good judgement was always reliable and helpful. In the Providence of God our brother Weeks was the first member of our Church and Board to be taken from us in the new year and new century, thereby leaving a vacancy in our ranks not easily filled.
We herewith place on record the high esteem in which we held the memory and life of Brother Weeks, and gratefully recognize his consecration to Jesus Christ, his Master and ours, and his unswerving loyalty to the Methodist Church of which he was for so many years an approved and honored member and Trustee.
We tender to Mrs. Weeks this heartfelt expression of our regard and esteem for her late beloved husband and humbly pray our Heavenly Father to sustain and comfort her in this time of great trial through which Divine Providence has called her to pass.

Another one of the pioneers of this district passed to his reward on Thursday last in the person of Amos Weeks. Deceased had been ill for only about a week, having first been stricken with tonsilitis which developed into blood poisoning.
He was well known here-abouts and most highly respected and his death will be sincerely mourned by a very wide circle of friends and aquantances.
The late Amos Weeks was the son of Joseph Weeks and was born at Long Point, Charlotteville, nearly 72 years ago. When about four years of age, he came with his parents to Dereham where he lived until his marriage which took place 44 years ago, the bride being Miss Elizabeth Stewart. At that time he removed to the farm in Middleton on which he resided during the remainder of his life.
His first wife passed away eight years ago leaving behind besides her husband, two daughters Mrs. Edward Paten, (Palen) of Yarmouth Centre and Mrs. Edward Rouse of near Tillsonburg. Two years later he wedded Mrs Geo. Andrews of Walsingham, who survives him.
Deceased was of a retiring nature and never sought public office. Kind and hospitable, strictly honest and upright in all his dealings, he gained the confidence and respect of all with whom he came in contact.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Tillsonburg Cemetery, the service being conducted by Mr. Bingham of Woodstock Baptist College. The pall bearers were Messers Geo Ancombe, David Long, Henry Laur, John Pygall, Morgan James, and John Carrier.

"Amos's land stretched from Townline, down South, across the # 3 bypass, on down to over the railroad"
quote from Margaret Rouse, 2005. "Amos sold the land for the railroad to cross his land East to West about 1887 or slightly earlier" There were 2 fields south of the railroad and quite a large woods that they cut some wood as needed for stoves.
As of 2005, there are no original buildings or trees left on the land Amos cleared; it is all industrial buildings with a few houses along Hiway #19.

" Amos had an orchard on the land west of # 19 highway, North of the # 3 bypass, section about 15 or 20 trees and a fenceline covered with grapes . This area ( part of that land) very hilly up to Young Street now covered with houses and levelled off.

" Where the #3 bypass is, that was the land that was swampy and before Amos Weeks died, he saw a bear cross that swamp, headed West for the Otter Creek. It was the last bear he saw, so that man who cleared the land also saw the last bear in the area. One generation killed off the bears as the bears were fond of stealing pigs." When Amos was a young boy, he was working on what would be his land, abt 1857,. He was coming up Old Vienna Hill, when a pack of wolves chased Amos home. He had worked later than usual that day, was dark and on his way down the Vienna Road. Both he and horse (s) were frightened, but the wolves stopped following at the Otter Creek where the bridge is now. Marg thinks the bridge probably wasn't there then, but one had to ford the creek there. Amos hurried up Tillson Ave to Cranberry Rd and to his father's home, Joseph Weeks. No one seems to know if Amos had a wagon or team of horses or just his saddle horse.

One year after the home farm was divided (1875), Joseph Weeks (who was born two years after his parents had moved from the Kern Settlement near Forestville, March 27, 1834), built a new modern home on his land, and was married on September 27, 1876 to Rosa Armenta Clark, and brought her as his bride to his new home.

Joseph was a very hard working man, yet was always known to have the time to aid anyone who needed help.

To this union of Joseph Weeks and Armenta (Aunt Minty as she was known to most people) were born 2 sons. William Nelson b May 6, 1879; Lewis Delmer b July 5, 1881.


One morning Joseph was going to help his brother Walter ( a distance of about 5 miles) to clear his farm, he met on Vienna Hill as we know it, which was at that time a mere footpath, a wildcat. Joseph with an axe over his shoulder stopped - so did the wildcat, - each staring at the other until finally the wildcat moved off and Joseph continued on his way.

" There was very little money in those days, but little was needed as all traded their surplus and their work. Work was done by bees - friends, relatives and neighbours would gather at dawn to build a house or raise a barn, and the women would cook and bake to feed these hungry men - and despite the work involved, they were very happy gatherings. Their work was very labourious - done with only an axe and adze at first, later by hand saws and later still by cross-cut saws. Whenever or whatever there was a need - helping hands were always ready.
In those early times doctors were few and far between, so mother took over in the time of illness, and usually someone in the neighbourhood with a special knack in caring for the sick would be on call whenever needed. The doctor was seldom called except in cases of serious illness. For the most part they were a hearty , healthy people.
Water was a very precious and needed commodity, and wells were detected by 'witching'. Fire was a dreaded enemy if uncontrolled - yet wood was the only fuel used in both cook stoves and huge cast iron heaters. Large pieces of wood were put in the stoves to hold heat and fire throughout the night.

Mr. Walter Weeks, a pioneer of this district, died at his home in Middleton, near Tillsonburg on Tuesday, after an illness of two weeks.
Mr. Weeks, who was in his seventy-nineth year, was born in Dereham. About fifty years ago he purchased a homestead in Middleton, near town and in 1878 he married Miss Mary M. Foley of Dereham and they settled on the farm where Mr. Weeks resided over forty years. He was energetic and indsutrious and was remrakably healthy during his long life, never requiring the services of a doctor but once, about thirty years ago. He took the entire management of his farm and did his plowing last fall with an expertness and energy not surpassed by younger men.
His wife predeceased him fourteen years ago. He is survived by five sons, W. J. and Ed. M. of this town, Andrew of Middleton, John of Eden and Clarence D., who lives on the homestead, and one daughter, Mrs. Mark Ronson of Goshen, also by two brothers, Joseph of Dereham and Isaac of Tillsonburg.
The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon, the services being conducted by the Rev. Edwin Smith. The interment was made in the town cemetery.

Ira was accidently shot and killed by his fiance, Nancy Turner, in his twenty-fifth year, two weeks before their wedding was to have taken place.

Not thinking any harm:
The gun was charged, she knew it not,
And so, feared no alarm.

While playing with the gun, she said,
"Ira, shall I shoot you?"
"Shoot," Ira said, the gun went off
and shot him through and through

The maiden screamed in accents wild
As his lifeless form she viewed
No pen can paint in character,
The awful scene that ensued.


The joys looked for upon that day
Were turned to sorrow, severe,
And the weddingers of fine array,
To mourners did appear.

Now who can tell the awful grief
That filled this maiden's breast:
No balm can give her any relief,
For her, there is no rest.

Her pities were all blighted
As the sky that appeared so clear,
Is darkened now, with many a care,
And a sorrow, so severe.

Isaac: A Hebrew name meaning 'He (God) may laugh', see the story explaining the name ( Gen18:9ff) Isaac was the child promised to the aged Abraham and Sarah and honoured by Jews and Christians as one of the founding patriarchs of the Chosen People. There are 8 saints, mostly of the early years of Christianity. Still used occasionally among Christian Jews (Messianic Jews) it has othrwise dropped out of use. Saints Day - 9 Sept.

About the year 1875, the home farm on the 9 concession of Dereham was divided
into two farms. Each farm was one field wide and a mile long - so Joseph and Isaac
farmed the old homestead with Joseph having lot 5 and Isaac lot 4. A little later
Isaac acquired the remainder of the land from lot 4 to Cranberry Road, and this land
was divided crosswise. Henry Weeks farmed the south east half and Ransom

I have been searching for more info on Duncan Slaght, wife Raceinia - Tillsonburg and District Historical society states Duncan's birth as 18 Aug 1846 ( I had noted abt 1845) and his death 08 Oct 1867 - so will use this as my source for now. The Tillsonburg and District Historical Society had done a huge project on Pioneer Cemetery, the residents that were buried there, further info etc - have erected a large plaque in honour of many graves that have disappeared over the years. hw

2017 For now I have accepted their research from their records for Duncan's birth and death dates, but I also have Duncan's brother Cyrenius' birth as 18 Aug 1846 - were they twins???? hw Further research reveals the1851 Canadian census recording Cyrenius Slaght as age 8 and Duncan as age 6, thus unlikely they are twins - placing Cyrenius' birth abt 1844 and Duncan's 1845/46 hw

# 19 Highway, there was an old school buidling, now (2004) being used for a church. This building was built after the one room school house out grew its usefulness abt 1950s. Margaret Rouse's sister, Grace Hart taught at this school in the early fifties. Grace taught Grades 1-8 here, her first school that she taught was Wateford, North of Simcoe.

It is thought the school south of Ostrander a mile, may have been the school where Charity and Rhoda attended.

Huntington's Chorea. Ted says Charity (Weeks) Rouse had the disease, Karl and some of his chn had the disease, Ida had the disease and Ted's Father Basil had the disease. In the year 1900 another change took place. Another house was built on the Joseph Weeks farm, (lot 5) about 300 feet in front and south of the big house. Alice Best came home as the bride of William Weeks to this new house, on December 23, 1903. There were 2 sons born to this couple in this house.
Lewis Harold b March 15, 1905; William Wallace b October 21, 1907.
in 1914, William Weeks moved his family to a farm in Bayham Twp. and the house was sold to Mr. Thomas Fletcher and moved to his farm facing Cranberry Rd. It is the house where Mr. and Mrs. John Langrell live now.

Lewis Weeks never married and died on the farm where he was born. He was hard working, shy and a very kind person who looked after his mother until her death. Lewis passed away February 24, 1958 and the farm was left to his 2 nephews, Harold and Wallace Weeks, with his brother William to get his keep from it as long as he lived.

District Obituary
J. W. Weeks
In the death of J. W. Weeks, in his 62nd year, after an illness of several months' duration, the town of Tillsonburg yesterday lost one of its best known citizens. Mr. Weeks was born two miles south of Tillsonburg, on King's Highway No. 10, where he was a successful farmer, moving to Tillsonburg 32 years ago and conducting a real estate business. He was a prominent member and worker in the Tillsonburg Baptist Church and Superintendant of the Sunday School for many years. He has been a member of Otter Lodge No. 50, I.O.O.F., for 30 years. Besides his widow, he is survived by one son, Ray, of Tillsonburg, two daughters Mrs. Gordon Hollier, of Tillsonburg, and Mrs. Gordon Stewart, of St. Thomas; one sister, Mrs Mark Ronson of Goshen, and four brothers, Edward, Clarence and Andrew of Tillsonburg, and John of Mount Elgin. The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon, with interment in the Town Cemetery.

Obituary:
Thamesford - Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, October 14th, in the William Carrothers Funeral Home for the late Ransome Weeks of Lot 10, Concession 8, East Nissouri (township), Rev. D.W. Cosens of Kintore United Church officiated and interment was made in New Road Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandchildren, Robert Green, Ronald Hossack, Robert Garnum, Ronald Cowel, Jack Jasper and Glen Jasper. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs Spence Gilgour* (Doris) of Culloden; Mrs Winnie Cowel* of London and Mrs Garfield Jasper, of Simcoe and one son, Horace of East Nissouri (township); also 12 grandchildren.

**I question some poss. errors in this transcription as I believe Doris married Norman Spence Kilgour; also a Minnie (not Winnie) Scanlon married James Cowell. Minnie Scanlon was a child of his wifes by a former marriage. No proof yet whether Ransom Weeks adopted these children as Minnie and Perceil were 7 yrs and 9 years at Ransom and Sarah Etta Partlo Scanlon's marriage ( HW.)

Ira Weeks, 81, passes Tuesday
A pioneer of the Knob Hill district, Mr. Ira Weeks, passed away at the Castor Hospital on Tuesday, May 29th, at the age of 81. He had been in ill health for some time.
Born in Tillsonburg, Ontario in 1870, he came as far west as Lacombe in 1905 and the following year brought his family out and settled in Knob Hill area, 22 miles east of the present town of Castor. In later years he moved to Castor and six years ago went to live with his oldest son at Fleet. His wife predeceased him in 1911.
He leaves to mourn his loss, two sons. Homer* of Vancouver and Ross of Fleet; three daughters, Mrs. Clara Quaife of Rimbey, Mrs. Pearl Strome and Mrs. Hazel Wilkie, both of Castor; 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, two in Ontario and one in Chilliwack, B.C. and a sister in Ontario.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 01, at 2:30 p.m. at the Markham Chruch, with interment in the Markham cemetery.

In the spring of 1905, Ira Weeks came from Tillsonburg, Ontario to Lacombe AB. He found work there for the winter, lived in a tar paper shack, and filed on a homestead. The next spring, his wife Roxy( ANDRESS) and five children came by CPR to join him. They lived for a month in Lacombe then put their belongings onto a wagon, hitched up the cayuses, Polly and Gin, and headed for the homestead, a 101 miles to the East.
For two nights we slept on quilts out under the stars and got to the homestead on May 08, 1906. On the way Dad had to buy a loaf of bread, costing 35 cents, a very high price in those days.
Dad had only $35.00 in his picket, no house and no well. The first thing he did the next day, he took his spade and went to draw about a quarter of a mile away and dug a shallow pit that soon filled with water so we had a temporary well. We unloaded the packing boxes and the cupboard and then set up a sort of shelter. It was just four big quilts fastened to upright poles, with a canvas over top, and we called it the "Quilt House". It stood right out on the open plain, just a little shelter for all of us and we lived in it until early winter.
To start our house, Dad dug a trench one spade-width all around a rectangle 6'x24'. Then all summer long, Mother dug the dirt out to a depth of five feet. While she was doing this Dad was busy cutting logs and hauling them from Beaver Dam Creek - 3 1/2 miles North of the homestead which was on NW 1/2-22-38-12-W4, about 6 miles NW of Bulwark. The neighbours came and helped put the logs up and the roof on. Chinking had to be done with small pieces of wood nailed over the cracks and then smeared with mud. The dirt walls were covered with rough lumber to keep them from caving in. We had just a plain dirt floor that winter.
When it came to digging the well, Dad dug while Mother pulled the dirt and mud up out of the well in a heavy bucket attached by a rope to a big windlass. It was heavy work.
It was beautiful country and we enjoyed going barefoot all summer. We had a good garden because Dad ploughed up a garden patch and we planted potatoes right in the fresh sod.
The following year, Dad bought four oxen, for which he paid $35.00 each. He had earned money by hauling freight loads of lumber and supplies from Stettler. He still had the cayuses, which he kept for many years. The little blue roan, called Polly, lived a long life for a horse, 38 years and raised many fine colts. Dad finally gave her to a neigbhouring family, the Stoffers.
Father ploughed sod for a barn and built it. He bought a roan cow from Mrs. (Maxfield) Williams who had a grocery store at Brownfield. Ross never liked the milk because to him it had a peculiar flavour. Besides the cow, we had some chickens and 2 guinea fowl.
Ross remembers an old song on the gramophone that said "J stands for Jersey City where the mosquitoes weigh a pound" and that, he says, certainly applies to the ones on the homestead. He remembers going with his father on one trip when they had to camp out for the night and sleep under the wagon. The oxen were turned loose to take comfort in a slough. The mosquitoes were so bad, that you couldn't leave your head uncovered or they would grab you by the ear or throat, and you'd have quite a battle going.
In the fall, Mother was really sick. She had pneumonia, and we though that she wasn't going to pull through, but God spared her for us. One windy night Mom and Dad carried all of us to the dug out part of the new house as they thought the Quilt House would blow away. We didn't know anything about it until the next morning. Three-day rains were a problem too, in the Quilt House, and that summer we had three of them, everything getting soaked but one big bed. For firewood we had only small brush and green wood, so it had to be kept dry somehow.
Winter 1906-07 was sure a hard winter. Six feet of snow on the level. Bitter cold. Snow came October 16 and snow was still around the bush until June 12. Mr Kelly, a neighbour, had gone to get us a load of wood as we had no coal. By the time he had the wood loaded, twas dark, the snow was deep, his team tired, it was snowing and blowing, but he stayed all night in the bush. He cut branches to keep a little fire going to keep from freezing. Next morning, he came to our place nearly blinded with smoke. He wouldn't come in the evening as he knew Dad was away to Stettler for freight. Mother gave him a good breakfast.
Next spring when the French Creek was flooding, the oldest Doering girls had a horse and buggy and were on their way to see their sister Bertha, who was working for Mr. Gorrell. The current was so high and strong that the girls were thrown into the stream and drowned. The horse broke loose and was found grazing in the coulee. Mr. Chabrier lived in a little log house near the coulee, and he showed the folks where the girls were in the creek. They were buried on a high hill on the Doering homestead. Later on in the summer, the mailman called Shortie, lost his team and mail sacks in the same creek when the water was high. He managed to swim to safety.
For the first few years, we got our mail at O'Delville, 18 miles W of our place. There was a grocery store there, where we could get our supplies. In 1909, we got our mail at Lindsville, where there was also a small store and post office. There was, also later, a post office at Lorraine, on the old Seamans place, and we have several postcards with that address.
In the summer of 1908, Knob HIll school was built, just a mile west of our place. Miss Lord was the first teacher and she boarded with the Ellis Warrens. Other teachers were Miss Pearl Howe, Mr. Purdy, and Jack Haynes.
The families that started that year to attend Knob Hill wre those of:
T.C. Gorrell (farmer): Roy Lawsen, Charlie Grover, Laura Gladys, Bert and Alice. They lived 3 miles NW of the school.
Charlie Coyne (carpenter) Cyril, Ila, Lillian, Thecia, Bernice. They lived 2 miles W. of us.
White: Eldon, Thorton, Floyd. Lived 1/2 mile East of us.
Tom Gordon: Louis, Gregory, Fay. Lived 1 mile SE.
Chabrier: Emile, Edmond, Marcel. Lived 3/4 m SE
Martin Ice: Ruth, Amry, Marjorie. Lived 1/2 m West.
Mrs Hall, Albert and Hilda.
Mrs Fred Logan: Laura, Lucy Rosie, Mabel.
Ira Weeks: Clara, Pearl, Ross, Elsie, and Hazel.
We had a good time with the neighbours. In 1909, Ross, Clara and I became janitors at the school. Ross built the fires, Clara and I did the cleaning, and generally had to split wood besides. For pay we received 5 cents a day in the summer, and 10 cents a day in the winter. When we quit, the pay went up to 25 cents a day and has kept spiralling to what it is today. Quite a difference.
We walked to school summer and winter, and didn't have many warm clothes for the cold weather. We had to spread lard on our bread instead of butter, and the Chabrier kids and Ross used to go North of our place about 2 miles on Sunday and shoot bush rabbits for food.
For entertainment, we had Box socials once in a while, or square dances. Sometimes a group would get up a big debate and try to outdo each other with logic. There were not many sports days, but on July 1st, we were given about 15 cents to spend and we had a good time on that. Maybe an orange, an ice cream cone, and 5 cents worth of all-day suckers.
T.C. Gorrell and his three boys all had homesteads in the Knob Hill district. Tom had a saw-mill and sawed the lumber for T. J. Coppock's big house, where Doug now lives and for the houe that the Gorrells lived in, in which M. K. Christiansen lived in until spring 1973. I well remember when George Sullivan worked at the saw mill and had one arm cut off. They hitched the driving team to the buggy and took off for Stettler and the doctor.
In 1908, Mother took a milk pail, several small pails and five kids, and walked 3 1/2 miles to the beaver Dam Crek to pick Saskatoons. She made three such trips and canned 40 quarts. In the summer Dad had Mr. Gorrell break thirty acres of land with the big steam engine and 14-bottom plough. The crop in 1911 was good, but frost wiped out the hopes of nearly all the neighbours. Dad's crop was not frozen and he sold it next spring for seed wheat.
In 1911, Mom's mother (Charity Sophronia) took very ill, so Mom and the four smaller children went back East (Ontario) for a visit. On the trip home, Mom became ill, lived for a month, passed away, leaving Dad with seven children. Clara was 13, I was 11, and the youngest Omar was just two. But we baked bread, and scrubbed clothes on the washboard and helped to cook and look after the family. Dad bought a windmill and a grinder and we used to grind grain for the neighbourhood at 10 cents cwt. Many were the sacks we ground. Ross was especially good at the mill.
In the fall of 1911, Ross had an accident. He jumped off the slant-roof shed on the back of the school barn, caught his foot on the top wire of the fence, and broke his elbow. He had to be taken to Calgary to have it set and as Dad didn't have that much money on hand, Dr. JJ McPherson loaned him $50.00. Ross was away three weeks at the Holy Cross Hospital, Dr. McPherson wa a very kind man.
Somebody must have complained about us to the authorities, because that fall, the police and one man came to see us. Dad was away so they looked the house over. We had just baked 14 big loaves of bread, and had a quarter of beef on the table. Someone wanted to split the family up, but Dad wouldn't hear of it.
When Dad sold his frozen grain the next year, he got only 35 cents a bushel. but he repaid Dr. McPherson. However, Dad had a loan on his homestead and because he couldn't meet his payment in 1913, he lost it and we had to move into a tent for the summer. ( The loan was taken at the time Roxy went East to see her family, also to Gorrell to clear more of the homestead, as required by the Homestead Act, then later when Roxy died, more financial troubles, poor crop) A most difficult time.
That year the CPR and CNR were both putting railways into French Coulee. Grade was built and track was laid from Coronation to Bulwark, and this was used for some years. However the track from Bulwark to Lorraine Bridge was abandoned and the bridge was removed a few years later. Crews that were working on the projects were those of Sharkey and Homes, who were camped down in the valley; Foley and Coughlin, who were up on the level, and Sandeens, who had a big steam shovel working in French Coulee.
Ross adds the following information:
Clara, who married Charlie Quaife in 1915, lived in Bulwark for quite a few years, where Charlie did blacksmithing. They moved down to Taber.
Pearl maried Milton Strome in 1917, and moved to the Castor district.
Ross married Zillah Irene Troyer.
Elsie worked for the Kishes who lived up near the river. She took an attack of appendicitis and died when she was about 17.
Hazel married Andy Wilkie, and lives in Castor. She was Matron of the Paintearth Lodge from 1968-1973.
Two brothers were born in Alberta, George and Omar.
George died when he was about 12.
Omar lives in Vancouver. He married Dorothy Dettlaff, whose family lives South of Throne.


That was our start in Sunny Alberta.

PS: Many early settlers describe the mosquitoes as being so bad in the 'early days'. The mosquitoes could be so bad, that a team of oxen would not plough, but if a farmer tried, the oxen, plough and all would just head for the sloughs. Source: The Ice Family Story

Also the bad winter of 1906-07 was the worst ever. Snow was so deep that the buildings were all buried. One could walk right over the top of the house, barn and henhouse.

Farming schedules or routines; The day would start at 3 am, and lasted until 9 am when the oxen were rested for the next shift that started at 3 pm and lasted until 9 pm. Usually 20 half mile rounds were made each day.

Omar Amos Weeks, born 1883, passed away November 26, 1954 in Chilliwack General Hospital in 71st year. Late of 426 Mary St, Chilliwack. He leaves to mourn his passing, 2 daughters, Mrs T. M. Thompson, Chilliwack and Mrs. T. Jackson, Vancouver; 1 son Harvey Weeks, Chilliwack and 3 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 29 at 1:30 pm Chilliwack. LOCAL BARBER OMAR WEEKS DIES AT 71

One of Chilliwack's pioneer residents and one of the first barbers in town, Omar Amos Weeks, 426 Mary Street, collapsed Friday and died in Chilliwack General Hospital. He was in his 71st yar.
Mr Weeks was born November 25, 1894, at Tillsonburg, Ontario. He had lived in B.C. for 41 years. He was a familiar figure to many who visited his barber shop on Yale road west and well known for his various club activities. He was an active member of the Oddfellows. Mr. Weeks belonged to Chilliwack Lawn Bowling club and was keen on the sport. He contributed press reports on the club's activiites for some time.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. T. M. Thompson, Chilliwack; Mrs. J. Jackson, Vancouver; one son, Harvey, Chilliwack; one brother and one sister in Ontario; five granchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Jane, October 4, 1950.
Funeral service was held Monday at 1:30 pm, from the Chapel of Henderson's Funeral Home, Chilliwack. Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Glover officiating. Cremation followed.
Pallbearers were Herbert Pook; Charles Davis, Ernest Pearson, William Teetzel, Kenneth Boake and H. Darling.

OMAR A. WEEKS ...... barber
Pay as you go is the unwritten motto of a man who has carried on a successful business in Chilliwack for more than 38 years.
"This not only applies to individuals but also to governments. If we keep abreast of financial and moral obligations the rest of life takes care of itself."
Briefly stated, this is the philosophy of O. A. Weeks: barber, bowler, bicyclist.
At 64, Omar - known to many as simply "O.A." claims he is still too young to use the sit-down type of barbering adopted by many shops.
He was born in Tillsonburg, a small Ontario town which has grown to be ... a small Ontario town.
"Nothing ever grows in Ontario," says Mr. Weeks. "It's too cold."
"Sure I like the West," he says convincingly. "I like the way young people get out on their own and progress. They make mistakes but they profit by them. and," says Omar wryly, "they don't elect Conservative governments."
Why does a man become a barber?
Omar Weeks was born and spent his early youth on a homestead farm carved from the Ontario timberland. The few hours away from the rigors of clearing land, plowing and tending stock, he spent in or near the town's only four -chair barber shop. Here in the nostalgic atmosphere of perfumed hair off and singed moustaches was the center of masculine gossip, the dispensary of travelled eloquence and harbingers of fascinating monologue.
Mr. Weeks had few regrets when he turned from strenuous agrarian labor to an apprenticeship in the four-chair shop.
His conversations with travelled customers soon filled his imagination with the opportunities of the West. Lock, stock and scissors he moved to New Westminster. That was 1910. a year later he caught the steamer for Chilliwack.
Omar's shop - the second tonsorial parlor in Chilliwack - consisted of two chairs and a thriving business. Gasoline lamps hung hissing from the ceiling and hand clippers cut their labourious way over the gnarled pates of loggers, homesteaders and ranchers, and the conversation was the most painless part of the operation.
There were never any moustache cups in Omar's shop, despite the fact they were still a fashion necessity for gentlemen during the early 20th century. "O.A." had definite ideas about moustache cups. As a matter of fact he claims without hesitation to be one of the instigators of the downfall of barber shop ceramics.
Twenty years ago Mr. Weeks' business reached the four-chair stage and his establishement was twice as large as it is today. Then came the depression.
Two months ago his shop - still in the Hart block where it was originally located - lost its third chair, an unused reminder of busier days.

My grandfather was always a hard worker. When we were around him, he was not exactly a happy go lucky fellow, but rather serious to we his grandchildren. He was loving, but also stern, as was Grandmother Margaret too. Grampa Omar always wore a wig; his barbershop was open 6 days a week. He never owned an automobile, but rode his bicycle everywhere. His pattern for the week was Monday to Saturday, go to his barbershop and open early and close late. On Sundays, he and his wife Margaret would attend the United Church morning service. After his lunch he would cycle to the local hospital where he voluneered his barbering services to those that were hospitalized - haircuts and shaves.

Probably due to memories he had some drinking problems, despite this even thru the 30s his employer never fired him.

Karl lost a leg above the knee and wore a metal leg the rest of his life. He would remove the prosthesis and swim very well.
Both Karl and his wife Theresa were caretakers of the Post Office, Tillsonburg, Ont. The post office was on the main floor, govt. offices on the 2nd floor, and their apt. above this on the 3rd floor. During the night of 5th, 6th September, 1918, he was in charge of a wagon hauling ammunition, when the enemy put a heavy fire on this area. Owing to his coolness and careful leading the wagon and horse were got away without casualties to personnel or equipment.

" after the Great War, Dad was returned home and discharged. Under govt. sponsorship, he completed his High School in Hamilton, Ont and then Normal School. Dad went onto be a teacher and then principal for the Hamilton School Board. He earned a BA through night and summer school.

The 4 oldest boys (Ray, Karl, Stewart & Basil) enlisted in the Army. GrandDad (Edward George Rouse) got my Father out as he was needed at home to help with the harvest. After the next spring planting was finished, Dad (Basil) re-enlisted in the Artillery. He fought in many terrible battles of WWII and was awarded the Distinquished Conduct Medal - 2nd in honour to the Victoria Cross. Dad enlisted as a healthy farm lad of 175 lbs - Mother was never able to get him over 140 lbs after the War.

At his late residence 4 Daleview Court on Monday, October 26, 1970, Basil Everd Rouse, in his 74th year. Beloved husband of Gladys Lowry and dear Father of Edgar, Ripley Ontario, Mrs Lyle Plumb (Diane) Sarnia and Dr. Frank Rouse, Oakville. Dear Brother of Lavell, Hamilton; Edwin, Tillsonburg and Harry of Saskatchewan. Also survived by 8 granchildren. Mr. Rouse was a public school teacher and principal in Hamilton for 41 years, retiring in 1961. Served overseas in World War I and awarded the D. C. M. Member of Westdale United Church and former Steward. Life member of King Hiram Lodge No 78 AF and AM Tillsonburg. Friends may call at the Swackhamer and Hilts Funeral Home. 1341 Main Street West (at Emerson Street). Service in the chapel on Thursday at 2 pm. Interment White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to the Ontario Society for Crippled Children would be preferred.

Mr. Rouse was a Principal and Superintendant with the Board of Education for 44 years prior to his retirement and was Past Master of Ancient Land Marks Lodge, an affiliate member of Acocia Lodge, secretary of Masters and Wardens Association. He was also a member and elder of Westdale United Church and a founding member of the Christian Education there. Friends will be received by the family at the Swackhamer & Hilts-Blachford & Wray Funeral Home, 1341 Main Street West (opposite McMaster) from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Sunday, December 4, 1983. Service in the Chapel on Monday at 1 pm. Interment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. At the request of the family the casket will remain closed. Edwin Weeks, as a young man spent a year in the Hamilton Sanitorium. Uncle Ed worked for Margaret Craven's folks in tobacco harvest as a curer. He worked as a carpenter on his own. Uncle Ed married late in life.

Notes:

Donald inherited the farm from his folks and changed the farm from mixed sustenance farming to a specialized tobacco farm. A nephew Ted (Edgar Basil Rouse) worked here when he was a teenager. His pay was $6.00 + board per day. Ted states how very fond he was of Donald and his wife Irene (Sandham). Irene's Dad was John Sandham - a great guy. Apparently John lied about his age and served in WW1 and lied again and served in WWII.
Don Sandham family lived 1/2 mile South of the home farm where Don and Irene farmed.

Obituary - W. ROSS RONSON
W. Ross Ronson of RR 2, Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Thursday, October 29, 1981, in his 72nd year.
Born in Middleton Township, December 17, 1909, he was a son of the former Anna Bell Weeks and the late Mark Ronson. He was a life long resident of Middleton Township. From 1939 to 1955 Mr. Ronson was a partner with Joseph McHugh in the Ronson and McHugh feed and machine business. When the partnership was dissolved Mr Ronson operated the Ronson Supply Co.,, dealing in lumber, from 1955-1961. He was a member of King Hiram Lodge No. 78 AF & AM.
Surviving are his wife the former Margaret Butler; his mother Mrs. Anna Bell Ronson of RR2, Tillsonburg, two aunts, Mrs. Mae Weeks of Delhi and Mrs. Bessie Ronson of Tillsonburg; and several cousins.
Resting at the H.D. Verhoeve Funeral HOme, Tillsonburg, where service will be held Saturday, October 31, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Ronald L. Evans of Goshen Baptist Church and Pastor James Twineu of Courtland Fellowship Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 2, 1957 in the Rimbey United Church at 2:00 pm for the late Mrs. Clara Quaife. Rev. Julian officiated.
Mrs. Quiafe was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario and moved to the Castor district in 1906. On April 24, 1914, she was united in marriage with Mr. Charles Quaife. In 1922 they moved with their family to the Taber district, where they remained until 10 years ago, when Mrs. Quaife came to the Rimbey district to live with her own family. During the past 2 years, she has been a patient in the Three-way Hospital.
She was predeceased by a son,Leo,who died overseas October 9, 1944 and her husband, who passed away November 29, 1944.
She leaves to mourn her loss, two sons, Stanley and Delbert of Rimbey and Edmonton, respectively; 3 daughters: Mrs Pansy McLaren of Cranbrook, B.C., Mrs Viola Robert and Mrs. Clarence Hronek of Rimbey; two brothers: Ross Weeks of Castor and Omar Weeks of Vancouver B. C.; and two sisters - Mrs pearl Strome and Mrs Hazel Wilkie of Castor. There are twenty grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Mr. J Bennink, Mr L.V. Schrader, Mr Carl Brun, Mr. Sander Thompson, Mr. Godfrey Frank and Mr. Dave Duke.
Internment was in the Mount Auburn Cemetery at Rimbey.

Obituary:
Mrs. Pearl Agnes Strome passed away in Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Castor on Saturday, July 25, 1987 at the age of 87 years.
Born March 13, 1900 at Tillsonburg, Ontario, her parents, Roxy and Ira Weeks and five children travelled out west in 1904 by ox-cart to the Bulwark District east of Castor, where they took up farming. Two more children were born into the family after settling in Alberta. In 1911, their mother became ill and died at the age of 35 years, leaving seven children and their father to carry on. One sister Elsie age 16 and one brother George, age 11 died in 1922. Her Dad died in 1951 and one sister Clara in 1957.
Pearl received her schooling for the few years she was able to attend at Knob Hill School. In 1917, she was united in marriage to Milton Strome and lived on a farm North of Castor. To this union were born 14 children, six boys and 8 girls. Later in 1947 they moved to a farm South of Castor and finally into Castor in 1960 when her husband's health was failing and he could no longer farm.
Pearl did a lot of sewing, making clothes for the kids and quilts for the beds, and she could always be heard singing her favorite hymns while she was sewing. She loved putting quilts together which she did right up until her last year and even though she had little spare time she always read her Bible and kept in touch by sending cards and letters to relatives far away. She liked canning, baking and cooking and she lived to have folks come and join the family at meal time. Her greatest joy possible, was her family, relatives and host of friends visiting her in her home, which she always enjoyed.
Predeceased by her husband Milton in 1968, one son Henry in 1952, one grandson Robert in 1978 and a son Walter in 1979, Pearl is survived by four sons; Clarence, Ernest and Daniel (Elda) all of Castor and Wesley (Marjorie) of Red Deer. eight daughters, Mrs Mary Ann (Art) Pedersen of Lacombe, Mrs Hazel (John) Annett of Fleet, Elsina of Castor, Mrs Dora (Dan) Morasch of Halkirk, Mrs Violet (Graham) Clark of Vancouver, Mrs Susanna (Jim) Bedson of Brownfield, Mrs Beatrice (Vic) Tschritter of Ardrossen and Mrs Ruby (Dave) Lopetinsky of Edmonton, 50 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers - Ross of Stettler and Omar of Kelowna, B.C., one sister Hazel Wilkie of Calgary and numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 pm onTuesday July 28, 1987 in the Castor Community Hall with Rev.Lance Duncalfe officiating. Interment followed in the Castor Cemetery.
If friends desire, any memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Elsie was away from home, working for the Kishes. She was up as usual by 5 am to do the breakfast preparations.

She didn't complain until late in the day, about having 'stomach pains's. She was taken into the hospital, but died that evening with a ruptured appendix.

Elsie is buried at Markam Cemetery, NE of Castor.

Obituary:
Hazel Belle Weeks was born March 3, 1905 at Tillsonburg, Ontario. At a young age she came with her parents to reside in the Bulwark district. She attended school at Knob Hill. On December 13, 1926 she was married to Andrew Wilkie. Their union was blessed with three children - 2 sons Allan and Richard; one daughter - Heather.
Hazel loved her family and home, she was a good wife and mother. She held a keen interest in her community and church. She was the Sunday School Treasurer, then Sunday School Superintendant at Knox United Church for 15 years.
She worked for a time as collector for the CPR dray business of Andy's, as a clerk for Joe Bain in his Furniture and Appliance shop, chef at Paintearth Lodge and then Matron of Paintearth Lodge from 1962-1974 when she retired.
After Andy's passing, she came to live in Calgary with her daughter Heather. She moved into Shouldice Lodge for a few years, and when her health was deteriorating, she moved to Bethany Care Centre Calgary in 1981.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband Andrew June 18, 1976, her son Richard February 24, 1981; one brother George and 3 sisters - Elsie, Clara and Pearl.
She is survived by her son Allan (Mollie) of Kingston, Ont., their children Deborah and Kevin; her daughter Heather (Dennis) Williams of Calgary, their children Darryl, Bonnie and Colleen; her Daughter-in-law Peggy (Allen, Wilkie) Brown and her daughters Janice and Jacqueline of Castor, 2 brothers Ross Weeks of Stettler and Omar Weeks of Kelowna; many nieces,nephews, and friends. Also one great granddaughter Jena .

Interment at Castor Cemetery.

Eulogy of Hazel (Weeks) Wilkie by Fred McHenry
Picture, if you will, 1906 when a small family abandons its efforts at tobacco farming in Tillsonburg, Ont and winds its way West to seek better fortunes in Alberta. Gazing at the stars as the covered wagon approaches their perspective homestead near the hamlet of Bulwark is a tiny one year old girl, Hazel Weeks.

Some four years later, she looses her mother in childbirth leaving her father with the unenviable task of raising a family of seven. It is a tough life in the lean-to shack where the children rapidly learn to fend for themselves. It is through this experience that Hazel develops a resourcefulness, which will support her well in later life. She walks daily barefooted the five miles to the Knob Hill School but his only in the better weather of summer for obvious reasons. Out to work at the tender age of 12 year, she is hired full time three years later as a domestic maid by an English family, the Belchers. It is they who train her in a much more sophisticated lifestyle - one of silver tea services and cutlery and a uniform of a quality that she had never experienced before.

Into Hazel's life comes Andy Wilkie, a tough Scot, a former coal miner, who has taken to delivering fuel to the rural areas surrounding the town of Castor. The relationship blossoms into one which is close and permanent. The year is 1926 and the wedding date is set for December 13, a date which is Andy's birthday and one which ironically was last Sunday when Hazel parted with us and this world. Married on a Saturday and back to work on a Monday, there was neither time nor the wealth for honeymoons in those days. Settling down in a two-room house, they had greater aspirations, moving ultimately to their pride and joy, a beautiful home overlooking the creek in a superb natural setting on the outskirts of Castor.

With a fervor for the quality and wellbeing of their community, Andy and Hazel develop an insatiable urge to participate and contribute; from construction of the curling rink to organizing bonspiels to development of the Elks playground. They are often the catalyst which solidified community support. To them it is more important to fund a community project than it is to afford a new dress or enjoy a vacation. Truly, they believe in a Castor community based on support one for another and all together.
And as they take pride in their developing family, Allan, Richard and Heather they instill in them the values, which they share with each other. They choose their friends not on the basis of what the friend can do for them, but rather what they can do for the friend. From the crusty Dr. McCartney to the lowliest CPR labourer, they choose their acquaintances not based on outward appearance, but rather on the quality of the inner person beneath the skin. With a strong bond to her United Church, Hazel has an innate faith in people which is unshakable and she is rewarded by their corresponding faith in her.

Easy going by nature and down to earth in her approach to life, Hazel tends to be the unflappable Mother and wife. She is one who can take the time to enjoy nature surrounding her and on the other hand an industrious mistress of her kitchen which had few equals for excellence.

If there is one disappointment in Hazel's life it is that of missing out on the opportunity for education; with an instinctive tendency for caring for others she would have been a natural in the nursing profession. But the opportunity comes in a different form; a chance to work at the Painearth Seniors Lodge in Castor. Unsure of her abilities when she is chosen as the Matron of the lodge, she demonstrates to herself and to others her willingness to succeed. She is a person who believes that the elderly can and do enjoy each other together in a setting where they do not become a burden on the younger generation. At the same time she believes in the respect and the need of privacy in one's own room. These are the fundamentals which she preached as a Matron, fundamentals which created an atmosphere of caring and self-support. Truly this becomes one of Hazel's greatest achievements, one in which she can take a great deal of pride. This is the success which is implicitly expressed in the fact that her retirement is delayed three years beyond the normal age of 65.

There is no doubt that Hazel's sense of caring and concern for others is evident in her later years in Shouldice and more recently in the Bethany. If I was to describe the Hazel whom I have known and grown to enjoy for over half of my lifetime, I would have to say it in three simple words
"humble, accepting and caring".

Of those seven brothers and sisters of the Weeks family who had to fend for themselves on the Bulwark homestead there remain Ross who lives in Stettler and Omar in Kelowna. Of Hazel's children, Heather, who has cared for her so faithfully is with us today, but Allan was not able to travel from Kingston, Ontario. There is no doubt that Hazel took great pride in all her grandchildren as she watched them grow and mature.

Notes:

George had been complaining about not feeling well before Xmas, saying he had 'stomach pains". He missed a few days of school but seemed to 'come around' during the school holidays and the Xmas season.

One day Hazel and Omar noticed that George wasn't keeping up when walking to school. They called to him, but he said 'I'm OK.'
The next morning, the same thing happened again. George couldn't keep up when walking and said he was turning back and going home. Later in the day he had a fever, and they called Dr. McPherson. He said to bring him in to the hospital, Ross hitched up the team of horses, the wagon and George was loaded into the back of the wagon.
The next morning when Ira (his Dad) and Ross were visiting, a smile came upon his face, eyes turned very blue and he was gone.

Another version of the THE IRA WEEKS STORY

As told to me (Heather Williams) granddaughter of Ira Weeks by Omar and Dorothy Weeks (youngest son of Ira Weeks) May 03,1997.
Ira brought his family to Alberta in the spring of 1905. He purchased land to homestead in the Linnsville (close to Bulwark) area. Ira contracted Mr. Gorrell to break 30 acres as was part of the homestead agreement to break a minimum amount of land each year. Due to some storms, misfortune in losing his wife Roxy, Ira had taken a loan out against his homestead, so when he had Mr. Gorrell to clear more of the land and was unable to fulfill the payment, Ira lost his homestead.

Thus little Omar Neal Weeks was motherless at the age of 2 years, in addition to his 6 other siblings.The family then moved 2 Ùa - 3 miles West of Knob Hill to a CPR house. Shortly after that Omar and Ira came home from church on a Sunday to find their rented home in smoulders, completely burnt to the ground. They lost all their personal belongings. My mother, Hazel Weeks Wilkie remained terrified of fires all her life, remembering that desolate feeling of earlier times.
Omar, as did many of his siblings, found work whenever and wherever they could. Omar recalls being the janitor at Arthurdale School, but his father Ira collected his wages and Omar never saw a penny of his earnings.
The years between 1913 and 1922-23 were lean and tough. Ira had lost the home place NW Ùb 223812W4 due to inability to meet his bank loan. Ira remained in the general area of Bulwark and worked at any odd jobs he could find. He always found employment in the areas of horse trading, horse training, farming, cutting and hauling logs. Ira had a brother Omar Weeks( occupation - barber) living in Chilliwack B.C. He owned his own business and had a family of 3 children. Whether Grampa Ira Weeks decided to visit his brother Omar or whether his restless spirit kept him roaming we are not sure but in the years 1922-23 Grampa Ira resettled in Agassiz B.C.. Here he lived and worked in the power station for approx. 2 years. The power station was a small shack, which had large pipes, and valves located in one end of the building and the family lived in the other end. The work involved opening or closing these valves according to the water run off from the mountains during the winter, springs months and during heavy storms. Hazel and Omar also lived with their Dad here and Omar attended school in this area as well. He recalls finishing Grade 7 schooling and is uncertain whether Hazel took classes here or not. He thinks she finished her Grade 8 in the Bulwark region. Ross and Zilla Weeks and their son Austin also came to Agassiz to find work.

As this kind of work was only seasonal Grampa Ira left Agassiz in the fall of 1925-26 on the Harvest Excursion back to Bulwark in Alberta.

Omar was also visiting the Millers home on a Sunday afternoon, when other friends of Millers arrived, including one person Dorothy Margaret Dettlaff. The following Sunday Dorothy and Omar attended the Stampede at Nose Hill. Omar was currently working for Joe Haggerty at Bulwark. the romance was on.

Dorothy and Omar were married November 02, 1933 at Dorothy's home in Throne. There were 18 guests including 2 witnesses at their wedding, and of this number 8 guests were family members. Her adopted mother was very much in disagreement with the nuptials. After the wedding Dorothy and Omar lived in Ira Weeks' barn.* The loft area was cleaned, papered and made a lovely, homey suite for 2. This barn was located in the coulee below the now Castor Hospital. The happy couple had lined the barn loft with brown paper to freshen the walls. Again her parents were horrified. Dorothy and Omar lived here for 3 months.

The next move was to a town named Chidwell - east of Lacombe. Omar worked for Jim Fife , a horse buyer for the Lacombe sales. They lived here until late spring of 1934. They moved from Chidwell to Wetaskawin. Again Omar was looking after stock at Pigeon Lake for a family - Wagers.

In the spring of 1935 Herman Frederick Dettlaff died suddenly of a heart attack; Dorothy and Omar returned to Throne to farm the Dettlaff homeplace. Omar purchased the machinery and stock from Mrs. Detloff as the farm was not doing well. Again the family was worried about foreclosure. Dorothy and Omar moved from Throne to Sylvan Lake. They both recall this as one of the worst moves they ever made. They bought a piece of land from a Finn and certainly were taken for a ride. Again they tried mixed farming for 2 years. This farm was 3 miles West of the Sylvan Lake town - size being Ùa section. Reality was facing them daily and eventually they sold out in 1939 and moved to Edmonton March 06.
The years 1939 to 1941 were spent working in Edmonton at whatever work could be found. They stayed in the apt. with Mrs. Dettlaff. Omar left in early August of '41 for Hammond BC . Dorothy joined Omar at the end of Sept.; the day after her brother's wedding (Sid Ley to Winnifred Payne) Sid was in the military and fought in WWII, his family living in Claresholm AB.

The next few years were tough, with many moves but all the while gaining experience and ideas of working for themselves. Hammond was a small place in lower mainland. Omar found work in the sawmill. The little shack was shared by 4 others and each had a little one room; thus sharing the hallways and bathroom. From Hammond Omar moved to Tollhurst - another 1 room place. He recalls paying $18.00 monthly for rent. Omar was running the tail sawer in the sawmill - an apparatus that turned the logs off the head saw. While operating this equipment one-day Omar was hurt badly - suffering a severe back injury. Eventually a claim was settled with the WCB at which during the rehabilitation time, Omar worked in a bowling alley sitting up the pins. His wage was $0.15/hour.

Their next move was to a 2-room suite in Flax. Omar was taking a welding course and used his studies to work for the city in the sewer dept. Also a large army camp was being constructed closeby and he worked here as well.

Another move but a most favorite one. They found a "beautiful" suite in Vancouver. Their landlords were the "Brookers". Both recall fond memories here and Omar worked on a fishing boat in the Prince Rupert area. He worked at this job for 3 months being paid $600. This was terrific and the best he had ever made. Bad news soon came tho. with the death of Dorothy's brother Sid in the fall.

Now was the time for their big adventure. Omar went into Interior Decorating and Painting of Buildings in Vancouver B.C. Their first home in Vancouver was a little house on 22 Ave. Next they moved to their larger home on 23 Ave in 1949. At this time Mrs. Dettlaff was in ill health and moved to their place to live with them. Mrs. Dettlaff lived here until she died in 1962. Many fond memories here on 23 Ave.. They had a thriving garden, special raspberry patch. Dorothy taught classical piano lessons from her home. In 1972, they sold this home for $23,400. moving to Rutland B.C. They rented in Rutland on Venture Road @ $140./mo. - approx. 4-5 months until their 'dream home' was finished on Knorr Road - taking possession in April 1973. Uncle Omar helped with the construction of his place, and did all the final painting.
Omar recalls starting his painting, wallpaper business in 1945, retiring in 1972. Dorothy was an excellent book keeper for them.

Memorial Graveside Service held Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005 at Markham. Omar's ashes and monument stone was placed at the foot of Roxy Alzina Weeks grave (his mother). Thirty cousins were in attendance with a luncheon held at Evangel Missionary Church Hall in Castor.

Bunny passed away on 22 November 2007 at Menno Home in Abbotsford at the age of 89. She was born in Chilliwack on Oct 31 1918.
Predeceased by her loving husband James Jackson in 1988 and also her brother Harvey Weeks, Sister Dorothy Thompson and nephew Ted Thompson.
Bunny is survived by her neices Wendy Brunner (Don), Faulkland; Dene Senft, Abbotsford; Sandi Williams (Bruce), Chilliwack; Myrna Peacock (Bill) Penticton and nephew Doug Thompson, Penticton. Also many great neices and nephews and great-great neices and nephews.

Chilliwack rejoices this week in the announcement of honor conferred upon
one of her sons, Flying Officer Harvey A. Weeks. Award of Distinguished Flying Cross to him comes after a long and hazardous term of service, and if there has been some brevity about the news which has reached Chilliwack concerning Harvey's award there are few here who will worry.
An award to Harvey, whatever may be the terms of the official citation, is a well earned one. His friends here have little difficulty in recalling the story; a husky, friendly chap whose grin belied a strain of seriousness, whose modesty cloaked plenty of ability too. Three tours of operations over Germany, Italy, and Africa were highlighted by participation in the famous Ruhr Dam raid and the winning of his commission.
Harvey has gained both his commission and his decoration the hard way. It is true of war that more brave acts go unheralded than otherwise, and we would not forget the hundreds of undecorated Chilliwack chaps in all the armed services who are conducting themselves in the same brave, modest and efficient fashion. At the same time, all Chilliwack is happy to join in congratulating FO Weeks and his family on this merited distinction.

PO Harvey Weeks, son of Mr and Mrs O. A. Weeks of Chilliwack, has recently received his commission overseas. P/O Weeks arrived overseas in 1942, a year after his enlistment, and has taken part in more than 60 raids over enemy territory. he was one of the district's foremost basketball players and an enthusiastic golfer.


Harvey Alexander WEEKS, Rank of Pilot Officer, Official Number as J.19206; Command or Group was No. 5 Group, Bomber Command, Unit was No. 617 Squadron, Total hours flown on operations was 302 hrs., 20 min; Number of Sorties was 46, Recognition fo which recommended was D.F.C., Appointment held was Operational Air Gunner.
P/O Weeks has completed 46 operational sorties as an Air Gunner. He has taken part in attacks against such heavily defended targets as Berlin, Essen, Hamburg and has several times been in action over Northern Italy. He volunteered to join ...Duties Squadron in March 1943 and has since then carried out 20 sorties against specially selected targets in occupied Europe. He has been operating continuously since October 1942 and his magnificent devotion to duty and complete disregard of danger when his aircraft has been heavily engaged have materially assisted in those successful attacks against the enemy. He has been a source of inspiration to the remainder of his crew and he is strongly recommended for the award of the D.F.C. (Distinquished Flying Cross). Dated 10 .... 1944.

After the war, Harvey was married and returned home to Chilliwack. According to family sources, Harvey had a tough time making the adjustments to peace time living and finding employment. He suffered from depression, nerves, and often partook of alcohol. Harvey and his wife never left Chilliwack after this, as Harvey took a job 'slinging beer' at various local establishments. He is referred to by many locals today (2003) as a most colorful man. He worked feverishly for the Cadet program and the Flying Club in Chilliwack. He was happiest when reminiscing with the guys or veterans. Many exerpts from his military file such as log books, names of crew members etc are filed in a special folder (Flying Club) at the Chilliwack Archives.

Burial Plot Location: World Canadian Legion Cemetery, Chilliwack, B.C. - Plot D125 with room for Doris (his wife) in D126. Centre 2 plots were left for cremation and Harvey's monument is (?) East in direction of the flag/spire. Although death occurred Mar. 22, 1991, interment took place Mar. 11, 1992.
