*** Some earlier research I found on Rootsweb had an Ahnentafel with the following info. I have not been able to verify any of this data, nor do I accept it as 'fact' or determine that these names are or could be our ancestors. It serves merely as a starting point because of the wills, time frame for when GGG grandfather Amos arrived in Canada. Also IGI mentions a Jonathan Weeks and Anna Miller with Son Amos - so again a starting point to see where it leads. As yet I am no further ahead in determining a link to our ancestors.

    Notes:

On the 8th of June 1796, Amos Weeks filed an Upper Canada Land Petition requesting a grant of 200 acres of land. On 8 Oct 1796, the Executive Council gave him a grant of 200 acres on Lot 9, concession 8, Walpole Twp., Haldimand Cty. An attached certificate from Robert Kerr, JP dated 29 Mar 1796 stated that Amos was 22 years of age, born at Westchester, NY, farmer.

Amos settled at Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co. He served as Petty Juror on the London District Court on 9 Mar 1803, 14 Mar 1804, 15 Mar 1804. On 30 April 1806, Amos purchased from William Rice 100 acres in the north half of Lot 6, Conc. 2, Charlotteville Twp. This is located directly North of the present village of Forestville. In the 1808 Assessment of Charlotteville Twp, his property was valued at under L100 and he was taxed 6 days of work on the roads. in 1809, he had 85 acres uncultivated and 15 acres cultivated, a house of round logs, 2 oxen, 2 milch cows, all valued at L53. In 1810, he was taxed 6 days of road work. On 28 May 1811, Amos purchased from Pelham Mabee 50 acres in the South part of Lot 9, Conc A, Charlotteville Twp. This is located SE of Forestville behind Turkey Point on Long Point Bay. In the 1811 Assessment he had 240 acres unculitvated and10 acres cultivated, 1 horse, 2 oxen, 1 milch cow.
A certificate dated 6 Dec. 1826 signed by Duncan McCall and appended to Amos' earlier land petition stated that he had retained his loyalty during the War of 1812 and did his duty in defence of the Province. In the 1815 Assessment, his property was valued at L56.16 and his tax was 6 days of road work.

#8916 - June 25 1828, registered Nov 7 1832, Daniel Miller Weeks (heir at law of Amos Weeks) sold to (brother) Joseph Weeks 100 acres N 1/2 for 31 pounds.

My research is stymied here as I still do not have a Wife's name or any vital stats pertaining to Mrs. Amos Weeks. I have no idea when, how Amos Weeks and or his family came to Upper Canada. I have checked the Loyalists records quite extensively and found no records of Amos or his family fighting during the war of 1812. Only comfirmed children I have are: Daniel Millar Weeks, Joseph Weeks, Amos Weeks. Rumours abound that there is a Peter Weeks, Cyrus or Silas Weeks that moved to US - New York & Michigan

(Research):I confirmed ( strong probability ) Amos Weeks was the Father of Joseph Weeks, Daniel Weeks, Amos Weeks Jr. when I located the Land documents that went to Daniel (eldest son) as heir upon Amos Weeks Sr. death by drowning. Daniel Weeks soon sold the parcel of land to his younger brother Amos Weeks Jr. There were also photos of Daniel Miller Weeks in the family collection in Ontario.

I have not been able to link a possible brother Cyrus or Silas and Peter Weeks to this Family

I have not found Amos Weeks Sr. wife's maiden name or christian names. One possiblility would be the name Rhoda as Joseph called his first child Rhoda and also Joseph's son Amos Weeks named his first child and daughter Rhoda

    Land Records:
Upper Canada Land Petition this event helps to establish a timeline for Great Great Great Grandfather Amos Weeks, also substantiates the Loyalists possibility, re his Father being a military person, thus further establishes a possible birthdate and location for Amos Weeks

The Charlotteville Abstract of Assessment proves the property Amos Weeks owned in 1808, further documented in Land Titles documents as well, establishes Amos Weeks as an early pioneer of this township

Unproven data -( recd from Slaght connection) ANC file # AFN:1QPV-N3C
Joseph Weeks (Wicks) married Rhoda Carnes. Issue is daughter Rhoda
Weeks(Wicks) married Silas Slaght - a descendant of Job, Job Slaght Jr. Rhoda Weeks and Silas Slaght were married January 29, 1843 See Slaght Genealogy for continuation.

Fact: Joseph Weeks married Charity Kern and children listed are Rhoda and 7 sons; John, Amos, Joseph,Walter, Ira, Ransom, and Isaac. I believe that the Slaght info is still applicable to this family as the Kern surname was often pronounced and spelled 'carnes, Karn'. The error is in naming bride and mother with the same christian name of 'Rhoda'.

#8916 June 25 1828, Daniel Miller Weeks, (heir et law of Amos Weeks) sold to Joseph Weeks 100 acres N 1/2 out of a total of 200 acres of land on Lot 9 concession 8 in Walpole Township, Haldimand County.

#8917 Oct 11 1832, Joseph Weeks sold the above property (100 acres N 1/2) of Lot 9 Concession 8 in Walpole Township to Harrison Oakes for 32 pounds.

    In Middleton NTR 6, conc 4 date 2 1855-09-24 Series )1 C15 004-027

    In Middleton W1/2 4 4NR issue 4 1853C - lease, Series CC B3 034-510

Eventually all this property was either given, deeded to his respective sons.
Joseph and Isaac remained on the homeplace sections, and
Amos, John, and Walter farmed the land in the Middleton area.

    "Family Legend:
Joseph took up a tract of land in Dereham township, Oxford Cty, Concession 9, Lot 5, bordering Cranberry Rd in 1832. ( I am assuming Joseph leased this land from the crown as above documents show this land bought in 1846-hw) . To procure the deed to his property, Joseph rode horseback to Niagara. His neighbours were Indians having a little settlement nearby. The women worked at household tasks together with Charity Weeks and the men worked and hunted together. Joseph and Charity raised their family of eight children here, seven sons and one daughter.
Rhoda married Mr. Slaght and moved to the state of Washington.[ again, I believe, via my research, that Rhoda Wicks is our Rhoda Weeks, and she married Silas Slaght, and moved to Michigan, USA - hw][ Rhoda Weeks and Silas Slaght's son, Cyrenius married Maria Caroline Weeks (his cousin - dtr. of Daniel Weeks and Mary Hawer - hw] John, Amos and Walter took up land from the crown South of Tillsonburg, in Middleton township, Norfolk Cty; and Joseph and Isaac farmed the homestead on the ninth concession of Dereham twp, the homestead being divided into two farms.
There was an almost complete cooperation among these early settlers, and a very deep love of the land. The five brothers would go to one farm, cut down trees, clear a spot for a log cabin, later to be replaced by a larger house and later still by a substantial brick home. Thus they went from farm to farm helping one another. There was very little money; work was done by bees - Relatives and neighbours would gather to build a house or barn, and what happy times these gatherings were. The women came along to help with the meals. Money mattered very little to those early settlers, any lack was made up by trading surplus, and theirs was a very leisured way of life. Not that they didn't work hard - laborious work was done with only an axe and adze at first, later by hand saws, and later still cross-cut saws.
These brothers were the happiest people. They were cutting a home for themselves out of the wilderness and doing it the hard way, and always with a joke and hearty laugh. Whenever there was need, helping hands were ready. In those early times, doctors were few and far between, so the mother took over in illness and usually someone in the neighbourhood with a special knack in caring for the sick would be on call whenever needed. The doctor was seldom called except in serious illness. For the most part, they were a healthy, hearty people.
Much of the land was cleared by oxen, later stumping machines and horses. Water was a very pecious commodity and wells were detected the "witching". Only certain people had the gift of witching and the early settlers firmly believed in this way of finding water. A branched twig of hickory was held firmly in the hands, stem pointing upwards and when the witcher walked over water, even deep in the ground, the stem would turn downwards. Fire was something to be dreaded if uncontrolled. Every care was taken to prevent fires from getting out of control. Wood was used for cooking and heating. A huge cast iron, square stove was used for heating. Huge pieces of wood were placed in the stove and would hold the heat through the night. They were always careful to bank the fire before going to bed, wind the clock and put out the cat." excerpt from family tree documentation by Ola Beaman,Mamie Elizabeth Rouse.

    Notes:

Amos settled in the Bayham area at Lot 6, conc 114. He was termed
a 'freeholder' meaning had property versus a householder who would only be living in that area perhaps leasing etc.
Amos bought from his brother Daniel Miller ( who inherited his fathers land upon his death) on 29 May 1828 SW of S1/2 totaling 59 acres . On this document of sale, Amos Junior 's occupation is noted as labourer.

Amos Weeks also bought an additional 6 acres from Pellum Mabee on 14 July 1842.
Then on 15 July 1842, Amos and his wife resold their 65 acres to Peter Snyder.
Document # 3429 of Land Agreements. Amos sold his property to Peter Snyder for the sum ¹175. On this Memorial Land Agreement, Amos and Mary Jane Weeks were residing in the" Twp of Dorchester, Southern Division, Middlesex Cty, district of London, Province of Canada" * I thought this was strange to note Canada as a province. In this document, Mary Jane Weeks also renounces her dowry rights for the sum of 5 schillings.

It is interesting that Mary Jane Weeks & John Haley's first child - Squire Wellington is born 1849 and Mary Jane & John were married in 1845; generally children came immediately within the first year or so; childbirths and pregnancies were not without complications during this time period, hence one explanation could be miscarriages or another explanation, children still not found hw 2006. Irene Hopper ( another serious Haley researcher living in Ontario) says one William Haley born about 1840 belongs to John Haley and spouse Athalinda; certainly 1840 is too early for John Haley and Mary Jane Weeks hw 2006

Although the surname entries on many of the census records vary in spelling, I believe this to be 'our' Mary Jane (Weeks) Haley - as her husband John died in 1884, thus widowhood fits, the district is that of 1871 census and I cannot find a 1881 census for anyone in this family to futher compare.

There are numerous Haleys about and the names are similar in the naming pattern, so tis difficult to sort them out. hw

This data would have Rhoda's birthdate as being 1824 instead of 1822 or 1826. hw

Many puzzles remain with the data collected for Rhoda Weeks, daughter of Joseph & Charity Weeks.
1 no confirmation at this time she is Joseph & Charity (Kern) Weeks' daughter hw
    2. not mentioned in Joseph's will, although it seems likely he wouldn't leave her land as she was now a Slaght and her husband certainly had many wives. hw
I wonder about Rhoda's Father - Joseph Weeks and his will. Joseph Weeks died in 1878, and as Rhoda was still alive but she is not mentioned in the Will at all - is this Usual??? hw

    3. I wonder about the origin of her christian names, Rhoda, doesn't seem to fit with Charity Kern's side - is it possible that was Amos Weeks' wife's name? What name is the initial A. meant to be? hw

    4. Haven't found a death entry for her either. Slaght researchers say she was mentioned on the grave marker for her husband Silas Slaght, but when I visited the cemetery (Pioneer Cemetery, Tillsonburg), couldn't trace the inscription at all. hw

    Death of John Weeks (Obituary)
Source: Tilsonburg Observer, Jan. 17, 1901
The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. John Weeks of Middleton, an aged reseident and pioneer and a gentleman well known and very highly respected throughout this section. Some time ago, while working in the woods, the deceased received a slight scratch on the right wrist, Nothing was thought of it until the Sunday previous to his death, when he became ill and the arm began to swell. Blood poisoning, ensued which resulted in death a week later.
Mr Weeks was 71 years old the Saturday previous to his death. He was the son of the late Joseph Weeks of Dereham and was the eldest of a family of seven boys. He was born in Charlotteville. Over sixty years ago he came with his father to the old homestead on the 9th concession of Dereham, the road in to the wood farm being followed by blazed trees. Forty-six years ago he married Miss Adeliza James, whose father lived on the adjoining farm. After their marriage they settled on the farm in Middleton where Mr. Weeks resided until his death. Twelve years ago his wife died and he afterwards married Mrs. Nicholas Stillwell of Eden, who survives him. The deceased was a Conservative in politics and had been a member of the Methodist Church 23 years.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and was very largely attended. The services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Brethour assisted by the Revs. Cuthbert and Weaver of Eden. The pallbearers were Amos, Joseph, Walter and Isaac Weeks, brothers of the deceased, and Ransom and Andrew Weeks, nephews. The interment was made at the town cemetery.
The following from the members of the Trustee Board of the Methodist Church was read by Dr. Brethour at the funeral.
    Resolutions of Condolence
We the members of the Trustee Board and of the Quarterly Official Board of the Methodist Church, Tillsonburg were deeply pained on hearing of the decease of our late brother and fellow worker, John Weeks.
He had gone in and out amongst us as a member of the Church for twenty-three years, and for twenty-two years he has been an interested, active and faithful worker on the Trustee Board of our Church. He was always present at the Board meetings when it was possible to be there. His matured and good judgement was always reliable and helpful. In the Providence of God our brother Weeks was the first member of our Church and Board to be taken from us in the new year and new century, thereby leaving a vacancy in our ranks not easily filled.
We herewith place on record the high esteem in which we held the memory and life of Brother Weeks, and gratefully recognize his consecration to Jesus Christ, his Master and ours, and his unswerving loyalty to the Methodist Church of which he was for so many years an approved and honored member and Trustee.
We tender to Mrs. Weeks this heartfelt expression of our regard and esteem for her late beloved husband and humbly pray our Heavenly Father to sustain and comfort her in this time of great trial through which Divine Providence has called her to pass.
Signed in behalf of the Board,
    D. L. Brethour, Chairman
    J. A. Caverhill, Sec. Official Board
Thos. T. Brown, Sec. Trustee Board

Another one of the pioneers of this district passed to his reward on Thursday last in the person of Amos Weeks. Deceased had been ill for only about a week, having first been stricken with tonsilitis which developed into blood poisoning.
He was well known here-abouts and most highly respected and his death will be sincerely mourned by a very wide circle of friends and aquantances.
The late Amos Weeks was the son of Joseph Weeks and was born at Long Point, Charlotteville, nearly 72 years ago. When about four years of age, he came with his parents to Dereham where he lived until his marriage which took place 44 years ago, the bride being Miss Elizabeth Stewart. At that time he removed to the farm in Middleton on which he resided during the remainder of his life.
His first wife passed away eight years ago leaving behind besides her husband, two daughters Mrs. Edward Paten, (Palen) of Yarmouth Centre and Mrs. Edward Rouse of near Tillsonburg. Two years later he wedded Mrs Geo. Andrews of Walsingham, who survives him.
Deceased was of a retiring nature and never sought public office. Kind and hospitable, strictly honest and upright in all his dealings, he gained the confidence and respect of all with whom he came in contact.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Tillsonburg Cemetery, the service being conducted by Mr. Bingham of Woodstock Baptist College. The pall bearers were Messers Geo Ancombe, David Long, Henry Laur, John Pygall, Morgan James, and John Carrier.

"Amos's land stretched from Townline, down South, across the # 3 bypass, on down to over the railroad"
quote from Margaret Rouse, 2005. "Amos sold the land for the railroad to cross his land East to West about 1887 or slightly earlier" There were 2 fields south of the railroad and quite a large woods that they cut some wood as needed for stoves.
As of 2005, there are no original buildings or trees left on the land Amos cleared; it is all industrial buildings with a few houses along Hiway #19.

" Amos had an orchard on the land west of # 19 highway, North of the # 3 bypass, section about 15 or 20 trees and a fenceline covered with grapes . This area ( part of that land) very hilly up to Young Street now covered with houses and levelled off.

" Where the #3 bypass is, that was the land that was swampy and before Amos Weeks died, he saw a bear cross that swamp, headed West for the Otter Creek. It was the last bear he saw, so that man who cleared the land also saw the last bear in the area. One generation killed off the bears as the bears were fond of stealing pigs." All quotes are notes from Margaret Craven, 2005.

When Amos was a young boy, he was working on what would be his land, abt 1857,. He was coming up Old Vienna Hill, when a pack of wolves chased Amos home. He had worked later than usual that day, was dark and on his way down the Vienna Road. Both he and horse (s) were frightened, but the wolves stopped following at the Otter Creek where the bridge is now. Marg thinks the bridge probably wasn't there then, but one had to ford the creek there. Amos hurried up Tillson Ave to Cranberry Rd and to his father's home, Joseph Weeks. No one seems to know if Amos had a wagon or team of horses or just his saddle horse.

One year after the home farm was divided (1875), Joseph Weeks (who was born two years after his parents had moved from the Kern Settlement near Forestville, March 27, 1834), built a new modern home on his land, and was married on September 27, 1876 to Rosa Armenta Clark, and brought her as his bride to his new home.

Joseph was a very hard working man, yet was always known to have the time to aid anyone who needed help.

To this union of Joseph Weeks and Armenta (Aunt Minty as she was known to most people) were born 2 sons. William Nelson b May 6, 1879; Lewis Delmer b July 5, 1881.

One morning Joseph was going to help his brother Walter ( a distance of about 5 miles) to clear his farm, he met on Vienna Hill as we know it, which was at that time a mere footpath, a wildcat. Joseph with an axe over his shoulder stopped - so did the wildcat, - each staring at the other until finally the wildcat moved off and Joseph continued on his way.

More notes from Ostrander Women's Institute Book
" There was very little money in those days, but little was needed as all traded their surplus and their work. Work was done by bees - friends, relatives and neighbours would gather at dawn to build a house or raise a barn, and the women would cook and bake to feed these hungry men - and despite the work involved, they were very happy gatherings. Their work was very labourious - done with only an axe and adze at first, later by hand saws and later still by cross-cut saws. Whenever or whatever there was a need - helping hands were always ready.
In those early times doctors were few and far between, so mother took over in the time of illness, and usually someone in the neighbourhood with a special knack in caring for the sick would be on call whenever needed. The doctor was seldom called except in cases of serious illness. For the most part they were a hearty , healthy people.
Water was a very precious and needed commodity, and wells were detected by 'witching'. Fire was a dreaded enemy if uncontrolled - yet wood was the only fuel used in both cook stoves and huge cast iron heaters. Large pieces of wood were put in the stoves to hold heat and fire throughout the night.

In Memory of / Ira / son of Joseph and Charity Weeks / died Sept 13, 1864 / ag 25 yrs 3m's/ & 6 dys.

Ira was accidently shot and killed by his fiance, Nancy Turner, in his twenty-fifth year, two weeks before their wedding was to have taken place.

    Ira Weeks
Come list to me, ye careless youths,
    And a story I'll relate
How by the hands of his true love
    Young Ira met his fate

He was a young and charming youth,
    And Nancy's heart had won:
    Together, they with plighted hands
    Were ever to be one

One day he called ar Nancy's cor,
As he was want to do
To see the one he loved so well
And to whom his heart was true.

They sat and chatted for awhile,
Their hearts were knit as one:
Not knowing that dread death was nigh,
    And Ira's course was run.

    Her brother from a-hunting came
    And repaired to Nancy's room
But he soon arose and left his gun,
    Yes - - Ah - - Alas - - - too soon.

Nancy arose and took the gun,
    Not thinking any harm:
The gun was charged, she knew it not,
    And so, feared no alarm.

While playing with the gun, she said,
    "Ira, shall I shoot you?"
"Shoot," Ira said, the gun went off
and shot him through and through

The maiden screamed in accents wild
As his lifeless form she viewed
No pen can paint in character,
    The awful scene that ensued.

The joys looked for upon that day
    Were turned to sorrow, severe,
And the weddingers of fine array,
    To mourners did appear.

Now who can tell the awful grief
    That filled this maiden's breast:
No balm can give her any relief,
For her, there is no rest.

    Her pities were all blighted
As the sky that appeared so clear,
Is darkened now, with many a care,
    And a sorrow, so severe.

Isaac: A Hebrew name meaning 'He (God) may laugh', see the story explaining the name ( Gen18:9ff) Isaac was the child promised to the aged Abraham and Sarah and honoured by Jews and Christians as one of the founding patriarchs of the Chosen People. There are 8 saints, mostly of the early years of Christianity. Still used occasionally among Christian Jews (Messianic Jews) it has othrwise dropped out of use. Saints Day - 9 Sept.

About the year 1875, the home farm on the 9 concession of Dereham was divided
into two farms. Each farm was one field wide and a mile long - so Joseph and Isaac
farmed the old homestead with Joseph having lot 5 and Isaac lot 4. A little later
Isaac acquired the remainder of the land from lot 4 to Cranberry Road, and this land
was divided crosswise. Henry Weeks farmed the south east half and Ransom
farmed the North east half. Source: Springford Tweedsmuir Women's Institute, copy by volunteer in Norwich Library, Archives.
