Double Bereavement, Father and Son Pass Away very Suddenly
Mr. Stanton B. W. Carpenter, almost the last of the early settlers of Tilsonburg, succumbed on Friday last to an attack of pneumonia. He had been in his usual health until the week previous to his death.
His son, Edwin W. Carpenter, who had been looking after his father during his illness, contracted a cold on Friday, which at once assumed a very serious aspect. Pneumonia followed, and all that careful nursing and skillful physicians could do proved of no avail, death ensuing late on Tuesday evening.
Mr. Carpenter ahd been a resident of Tilsonburg since April, 1855 and has lived here continuously ever since with the exxception of one year spent in Michigan. He was born in Herkimer county, New York. He worked for the late Mr. E. D. Tillson for over 21 years, and since that time has been in the furniture and undertaking business and for many years had the largest business of the kind in this part of the province. He was married in 1856 to Miss C. Weeks, and they raised one son and one daughter to manhood and womanhood, the daugher having preceded him to the other world a few years ago, and now the son follows him after only a few days. Mr. Carpenter was in business with his brother - in-law, the late Wm. Kimpton, some years in the furniture and undertaking business and has spent most of his life in that business. His reputation as an undertaker was of the very highest order, and he had a wide range of country for his field, as he was called to all parts to bury the dead, but the cold hand of death reached out after him, and other hands have laid him away in the grave in the same way he had for others hundreds and hundreds of times. He never was in public office, but he was always outspoken in matters of public concern, and was generous hearted and loyal to his adopted town. Deceased was a charter member of Dufferin Tent No. 30 of the Maccabees and was commander of the Tent for several years, and carried a policy in the order for $2000.00
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. J. J. Brown of Avondale Presbyterian church. There was a very large attendance of relatives and friends and Maccabees, and several beautiful wreaths and bouquests adorned the casket, one wreath being from the local Maccabee Tent. The following members of the society acted as pall bearers: John McIntyre, W. McGuire, J. O. Fluelling, John Barnard, S. E. Wilcox, and G. Berriault.

Tillsonburg Liberal Newspaper, Feb. 13, 1902 Obituary
The death of the son, Edwin Wilcox Carpenter, comes like a thunderbolt to the poor stricken mother, who is left without a child to comfort her, and to be bereft of both husband and son at one stroke has caused the most profound sympathy for Mrs. Carpenter both in town and the whole district.
It is a severe blow to her, as he was an affectionate son. His constitution was not rugged, as he has suffered from asthmatic affections from childhood. Of late he has looked after the undertaking business for his father, and was thoroughly competent for the business. As a young man he took quite an active interest in town affairs, and was connected at times with musical institutions which made him quite popular with many young people. He was born in Tilsonburg on Feb. 3 1877, and has always lived here, and was well known to the public. Last Friday he was around town making arrangements for his father's funeral, and this Friday, at 2:30 p. m., his remains will be carried to their last resting place in the family plot in the town cemetery.
Mrs. Carpenter wishes the Liberal to express her heartfelt thanks to the friends for the kindness shown her in her great affliction, and for the many tokens of sympathy and beautiful floral offerings sent to adorn the caskets of her husband and son.
