I am presuming for the time being a probability exists these may be the parents of my G G Great Grandfather Robert Wilkie. My reasons being that the dates jive and the naming pattern is familiar. Further descendants used the names of Dewar as a middle name for one of the children, suggesting that John Wilkie & Margaret Dewar may also be connected as poss. parents. Further research required to truly verify as fact however.
As of January 2011, many Wilkie researchers are still clinging to this strong probability - that John Wilkie & Janet Stevenson are indeed the Parents of Robert Wilkie married to Christian Paul,
Isabel Ann Wilkie married to James William Dick
John Wilkie & Christian Ross , then Helen Main
William Wilkie & Henrietta Aiken Philp
The sources being used are Old Parish Records, Aberdour Parish; IGI, various individual birth, marriage, death records kept by various family descendants and family stories or legends HW
However going back from John Wilkie married to Janet Stevenson, the possibilities and probabilities are many - some researchers choosing John Wilkie & Margaret Dewar, others William Wilkie & Margaret Donaldson !!! On and on goes the puzzle HWJohn married Janet Stevenson on 13 Oct 1769 in Dalgetty, Fife, Scotland. Janet was born on 24 Apr 1749 in , , Fife, Scotland; was christened on 30 Apr 1749 in , Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Birth Source: OPR Aberdour 401 Births 1811
" Nov. 16 Born to Ms William Dick Banks & Isabel Wilkie, his spouse a son - John"
Source for this family is Andrew S. Bowman and OPR, Aberdour/Kinglassie
2nd source is from Alta Pennington Dick, daughter in law, as Margaret Kay Dick recounted her memories.
"The John Dick family in the United States, landed in Boston, MA in the spring of 1866. They crossed the Ocean in a sailing vessel and were six weeks in crossing; the ship was driven from its course in a fierce storm which took them into the Bay of Biscay. Walter Dick's fourth birthday occurred (Mar 20th) while they were crossing and the Captain invited him to eat dinner with him but called him "Paddy", which made him spunky and Sandy (A.K.Dick) ate dinner with the Captain instead.
Coming in a sailing vessel enabled them to bring many of their household effects with them; and as they had become acquainted with many sea captains who boarded with Aunties - Anna Law and Belle Kay, sisters of Mother Dick, who kept an inn in London on Tower Hill. They came by ship. The family had moved to London on account of reverses suffered from the loss of money. James Finley, a brother-in-law, and Robert Finley, his son, forged a note on Father Dick, by which he obtained quite a sum of money, enough to cause them to leave Milldeans, their home, and go to London where Father Dick worked for a wine merchant and William Dick, his oldest son, kept books for the firm. William was 14 at this time and had a voice. He and his sister, Agnes Blythe Dick, often played together, she playing the piano. Their mother also played the piano and sang. She had been educated at boarding school. Robert Kay Dick, the second son, was not as serious minded, thought more of having fun and playing jokes. Isabella Dick, the second Daughter, was called 'Easy', a jolly, fun loving girl. John Dick, the third son, loved music and had a beautiful voice, also a beautiful character. He died at twenty-two years. James Dick, fourth son, was a serious young man, had a good bass voice but was too timid to use it. Alexander Robertson Dick, 5th son, was the finest one of them all, acting as second mother at different times to many of them, always willing to go and help out, although in the later years his hearing became a hindrance and made him timid. He also loved music and lead the choir for a number of years. William used to jokingly liken him to 'Andre Mauckum', an old choir leader in Scotland. Walter Scott Dick, the 6th son, was a fine upstanding man, good looking and good acting. He taught school for a number of years, everyone liked Walter. Maggie Kay Dick, the 3rd daughter, was spared to be a help to Mother Dick in her declining years. Mother Dick's older sister, Auntie Law, kept a little shop. She and Aunt Bella Kay took an 'Inn' where sea captains boarded. They did a thriving business for awhile. Auntie Law had married Robert Law, a Sea Captain, and settled in London a few years before the Dick family went there. Aunt Bell Kay made her home there. Robert law died after he and Aunt had been married eight years. The younger Dick children went to school in London, all except Walter and Maggie. Maggie had a cleft palate and never could talk very plain.
After landing in Boston, the family came to St. Charles, MO, where
they lived for two years, coming to Jasper Co., MO in 1868. They landed at Peter Orrs, he and his wife, Agnes (Shanks Thom) Orrs, being Scotch, welcomed them as relatives and made them feel at home at their farm on North Fork near Medoc, MO., where was formed a friendship which lasted during the lives of both families.
Father John Dick died soon after coming here. This part of Missouri was full of malaria at that time, and the change, with too strenuous work and worry and insufficient and unsuitable food did their work. The family had chills, at one time all were down but Sandy, who ministered to the rest. Father Dick had a congestive chill, he died the next fall after coming to Medoc (1869).

Elizabeth was enumerated with John Philp on the census of 6 Jun 1841 at Bankhead, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland, as Elizabeth Wilkie. Elizabeth was listed as Supported by the parish, born in the county and aged 30. (ages were rounded down to the nearest 5).
She was in the household of John PHILP and (2nd) wife Catherine JOHNSTON at Bankhead in 1841/ They were living with John's son Robert PHILP, tenant farmer of Bankhead and Robert's wife Margaret LOCHTIE and family. (from Judy Philip - Australia)
She was enumerated on the 1851 census with Andrew Arment at Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. The entry listed one Elizabeth, 61, MIL, Right Parish Relief, Birthplace Aberdour. ( I, HW, think it is a misprint by enumerator and should be 41, and sister in law SIL)

Aberdour Poor Register, 1845 lists
WILKIE, ELIZABETH: aged 36, and native of parish, is an orphan, and resides with her grand-uncle, John Philp, at Bankhead, par of Dalgety; is fatous (sic) and otherwise very weakly, and hardly able to wak out of doors without aid of staff; has 4 brothers and 2 sisters, of whom 3 brothers & one sister are married with families, and the other brother & sister are in service; does not receive assistance from any of them; Entry: 4 June 1838 at 3/6 weekly; in 1847 -48 resided with her sister and brother-in-law, Andrew Arment, at Cupar-moor, and removed with them to Puddledub on North Balmule on 11 Nov 1848.
Death Registration: Source: 1858, Parish 401, Entry 17
At Beverkae, Parish of Aberdour, on 15 March 1858, Elizabeth Wilkie, Spinster, aged 52, daughter of Robert Wilkie, Ploughman deceased, and Christian Paull(sic). Cause of Death - Chronic Hydrocephalus (30 years), buried in New Church Yard, Aberdour as certified by Hugh Livingston, Gravedigger, the informant Andrew Arment, brother in law.
There certainly are discrepancies of Elizabeth's age from the Census records and Death Registration - however as noted earlier on the 1841 census - the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5; Brother in law Andrew Arment (Arnott) perhaps didn't know her actual birth date when he registered her death. hw

According to the Poor List(1845) the documentation for Elizabeth Wilkie notes she (Elizabeth) had 4 brothers & 2 sisters of which 3 Brothers & one Sister were married and 1 Brother & Sister that were in service. As Elizabeth lived with Isabella & Andrew Arnot in the 1840s, that is one known marriage, Charles probably was married to Agnes Paton re the birth dates of their children, subsequently it appears John was married to Barbara Hay, living in England and William Dick Wilkie was married to Margaret Fraser.
I have found 2 possible marriages for Janet Wilkie, Daughter of Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul.
a) July 25, 1834, Contracted David Hay, Private Soldier in the 2nd Royal North British Dragoons or Scotch Greys at Present stationed in Piershill Barracks, Edinburgh and Jane Wilkie in this Parish and after regular proclamation on the 27 th currt. Witnesses were David Wilkie & John Wilkie
Argument for this marriage, Jane or Janet did have 2 brothers named David & John, the fact that David's name is first I would think he was the eldest and that isn't the case in Janet's family - John would have been 22 yrs of age and David 8 yrs old - so this leaves me pondering. Referring to the entry of the Poor List in 1845 - I don't know if that info of 4 bros, 2 sisters is accurate. Another source (IGI) states Jane's Father as David Wilkie, in which case would not be 'our Janet Wilkie' dtr of Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul
b) July 26th, Contracted to William Deans, Labourer and Janet Wilkie, both of this Parish and after regular proclamation on the 27th currt were married on 1st August by Rev Wm. Dalziel, Dunfermline. Witness was Hugh Blaik. The witness Hugh Blaik is unknown to me, but Janet sounds more like our family rather than the previous case of Jane.
Death
This entry is followed by another entry in the OPR 401/3 Deaths naming Janet Wilkie, age 22 died 23 December 1834, Wife of Wm Deans, Labourer Burnbrae. Janet was interred on 26th currt in Old Church Yard. Janet Wilkie's Father - Robert Wilkie was Farm Servant, at Burnsbrae and he died there in 1831, her Mother died there in 1834, thus seems likely Janet may have been employed here as well. This seems a closer match, but at this point I don't know where else I might find further proof to say this Janet's parents were Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul. The age is correct tho.
I continue (December 2010) to look for another Janet Wilkie, none has surfaced with any other researchers as well, so again, I am taking an educated guess at this point to say she did marry Wm Deans and subsequently died a few months later in December.

One Wilkie researcher, Elspeth Hutchinson is related to John ( an Uncle) via marriage (Her husband - John Hutchinson's b 1944 lineage - his Father John Hutchinson 1908-2000, then Grandfather Arthur Hutchinson 1882-1952 md Kate Constance Brown, then Maternal Gt Grandparents Thomas William John Brown & Mary Ann Wilkie - her parents David Johnson - Johnston Wilkie & Eliza Rogers), his full name supposedly was John Robert Wilkie but I have not found that name on the OPR birth record, the IGI, census of 1841 & 1851, nor have I seen a copy of his death certificate.

Our Wilkie English relatives are strongly suggesting that John Wilkie (as we Scottish/Cdn folk researchers know him) his full name was John Robert Wilkie - which following the Scottish naming pattern - John would be named after his Grandfather John and perhaps Robert after his Father Robert - all guesses at this time hw

I believe this Family to be William Dick Wilkie, Son of Robert & Christian (Paul) Wilkie - will cont. research hoping to find a death, as not on 1881 Census. These names are indicative of naming patterns in Robert & Christian 's family. Article from the Otago Witness newspaper, Issue 1446, 9 August 1879, Pg 20 "The Greytown Railway Station"
To the Editor:
Sir, I hope you will permit me, through the medium of your paper, to publish the particulars of a case which should be made known to the public. Mr Wilkie purchased from Government, at a very high price, less than a quarter of an acre of land close to the Greytown railway station, upon which he had every reason to suppose a license would be granted. Having applied for a license, he was informed that it would be necessary to make certain alterations. These alterations were made, at a further expense, and in the meantime a petition was got up aginst the issue of a license, which was signed by Good Templars and others residing at Mosgiel, Outram, and other distant parts of the district. The license was refused twice, and the result was that the proprietor was ruined. Another party then applied, and he also was refused. A third is now in possession, keeping the place open, at a loss, as a coffee-house. Although he presented to the Bench a petition signed by 43 residents of Greytown, and there was no opposition, still a license was refused.
The establishment here of a htoel and refreshment rooms would no doubt be a great public convenience. Nine trains a day stop to water here; besides extra and special trains; and pasengers are constantly in want of refreshments, as well as shelter from the cold and rain. Common justice, too, demands that license should be give to the house. Signed A Traveller
"A Notable Event"
Mr and Mrs William Wilkie of Greytown, East Taieri, celebrated their golden wedding with great rejoicings on the 18th inst. at the residence of their Son in Law, Mr John Sinclair, Cargill Street, Dunedin. Mr & Mrs Wilkie have borne the burden and heat of the day for 50 years, and they are still as hale and hearty as can be expected at their time of life. They are natives of Leslie, Fifeshire, Scotland and had five sons and three daughters, 24 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, all of whom, with the exception of one daughter, who is in Leslie, Fifeshire, took part in these festivities.* Mrs James C. Renton, George Street, is a Daughter, and her daughters Maggie & Bella, together with Misses Mary & Agnes Sinclair, (also grand-daughters) of the worthy couple) officiated as the golden bridesmaids. This is the second occasion on which the little Renton girls have acted in this capacity, they having been in evidence at Grandmother Renton's Golden wedding 18 mos ago. It is a unique experience, and these young people rejoice in the possession of grandparents on both sides who are in the enjoyment of excellent health, and who united ages, it is worth mentioning, amount to 303 years. At the close of a day full of happiness the golden bride was presented by her relatives and friends with a purse of sovereigns.

Altho the above research I (with the leads made possible from possible cousins) have done doesn't 'without a doubt' confirm these individuals / families to be our Wilkies - there is strong probability that is so. The descendants in New Zealand and Australia state (as fact that William Dick Wilkie was the Son of Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul) they also do not claim to have a 'family Bible' or book of memoirs that conclusively state that but then they are a few generations along the line like me - thus some of the material could easily have been lost in moves, etc. HW Jan 2011

I have not found any further data, events for David Johnston Wilkie. Haven't found any census records, but referring back to the Poor List documenting his Sister Elizabeth, I am presuming he is one of the brothers in service at the time Elizabeth was recorded on the Poor List, as David J. being one of the youngest boys in the family and soon would be an orphan as both his parents were deceased in 8 years hence. hw
Corresponding with a descendant of David Johnston Wilkie in April 2010 via ancestry.ca. I found much of her material based on a collaboration of researchers on ancestry and not all of the data was verified, thus errors occurred.
Elspeth Hutchinson & husb John had Robert Wilkie & Christian Paul's parents different than John Wilkie & Janet Stevenson, & likewise for Christian Paul. I shared with her my OPR births, deaths and the data on Elizabeth Wilkie and slowly we are correcting poor connections.
For David Johnston, there are still many unanswered questions. Where did he go in Scotland after his Mother's death in 1834? It seems by 1841, a Brother John had moved to London, marrying a Barbara Hay and establishing his family there.
David Johnston is recorded on the 1841 Scotland Census residing with Wm & Mary Wilson family (unknown to me as far as relations are concerned) - the Head of the family Wm Wilson is a shoe manager/ maker; David is age 15, and apprenticing in the shoe making business. No real proof at this point that this is our David Wilkie tho. as no Johnston name after the David
1851 England Census: St Giles Cripplegate, Middlesex, England
David Wilkie is located at an establishment, apprenticing or working as a Baker. There are other lads from Scotland as well as other parts of the UK. David is Age 25 yrs
1852 - David Wilkie marries Eliza Rogers, the marriage taking place at Westminster, London, England (close to where his Brother John & Barbara ( Hay) Wilkie are living. David is Age 26, working as a Wine Merchant's Porter
1860 - Death of David Wilkie - Location Strand, London, Middlesex, UK - his age 34 yrs.
