    Extract from the Dundee Courier
"SECRETS OF THE ROUTE ACROSS FROZEN LOCH LEVEN"
Sir,- There has been a good deal about Loch Leven in "The Courier" in recent weeks; some of your readers may find the following story of interest.

I was a general practioner in Kirkcaldy for over 35 years. About 30 years ago I had as a patient an old man in his 80s, Charles Wilkie, who lived in the Raith Estate.

He had been a farm worker for most of his life and told this story about his first job.

Having left school (at the age of 12) he was working on a farm on the north side of Loch Leven.

One winter's morning, when the loch was frozen hard, he was told by the grieve to get his horse out and harnessed to the cart; the man did the same, and they then put four sheep into each cart. he was then told to follow closely and do exactly as the older man did.

Much to his surprise and alarm they drove down to the edge of the loch and struck out across the ice!

He was not at all happy about his. In fact he "took a good grip" on the two nearest sheep so that they would keep him up if the cart went down! However, after one or two slight changes of direction they arrived safely on the priory island and later repeated the trip to fetch more sheep.

It was only later that he was told that there was, in fact, little danger; the grieve steering by chruch towers and other landmarks in Kinross, across the loch, was following the line of an old causeway out to the island, presumably made by the monks, and had the horse and cart gone through the ice the horse's head and the body of the cart would still have been above water (though a rescue might have presented problems).

The instructions regarding the route had been carefully handed down in that farm (presumably Portmoak or Grahamstone), which had the right to put sheep on the island.

This incident probably happened just over 100 years ago. I believe the level of the loch was changed at the end of last century, when the dam and sluices were built, and the "new Cut" to Auchmuir Bridge made to drain the marshland East of the loch; so perhaps the causeway is now much deeper under water.

Dr. E. R. Lewtas Gregson, 51 Dundee Road, Perth"

Cause of death - Hypochronic Anaemia, Congestive Cardiac Failure. Informant was A. Wilkie, son, of Parkhead Cottages, Falkirk

** A son, named A. Wilkie, that I cannot find a birth registration for belonging to Wm Brown Wilkie & Mary Ann McGregor, I am wondering if this individual was Andrew Wilkie born to Andrew Wilkie & Mary Sharkey in 1902. Mary Sharkey died in 1903 and Andrew Wilkie died in 1907 but was with a Janet Laing - so perhaps Wm Brown Wilkie & Mary Ann McGregor adopted or raised him as their son.

Upon returning to Canada he worked in coal mines in the Garden Plains area - along with his Brother in Law Jimmy Easton. The owners of those mines were Bob Unsworth and Bradshaw Mines. Later he worked for Remillard Mines - by Halkirk area - the location where Grampa suffered his eye injury due to dynamite that didn't ignite immediately but sometime later, 'blew', injuring Grampa in the face - forcing him to have many months of care in Calgary and Castor Hospitals - resulting in his glass eye.

I am uncertain of the exact date, but when Grampa Dave was working for Remillard mines either in the late 1930s or early 1940s, dynamite was lit and everyone had cleared the respective area for the explosion to occur; nothing happened - several miners went up a ladder to check why - and then it was Grampa's turn to check as the expected explosion hadn't occurred. Just as he reached the area - the explosion occurred - resulting in serious injuries to him - the loss of his Left eye as well as pieces of coal debris embedded in his skin - which remained for the remainder of his life - there was no way of removing this without serious skin grafting - neither expertise nor money was available for this option. To complicate matters further, there was no insurance for the workers in these small mines and no compensation when accidents happened. Grampa was taken to the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary for treatments and a glass eye prosthesis. This exhausted his savings account and his Son Andy (my Dad) helped with the expenses. From that time onward, Grampa had a glass eye prosthesis - and again technology wasn't what it is today. The special type of glass used to come from Germany but during and after WWII, laboratories used another form of glass / plastics. It was not easy to insert the prosthesis into the orbit, cleanliness was required, both to the orbital cavity, the prosthesis as was lubrication. In the 21st century it is thought the life expectancy of a glass eye prosthesis is about 5 yrs - I wonder what it was back in the 1940s. Grampa never received any replacements - but used the first and only one he was given. He and our Father never returned to working in the mines following this accident.

Grampa found work in the local Pool Hall, working the tables, selling snacks and beverages as well as the cleaning of the establishment. He put in long hours - often 12 hour shifts on weekends & holidays - then a half-mile walk home after closing. Grampa never owned a car or drove a vehicle.

THE JAMES EASTON STORY - by Elechia Chidley
Source; Hanna North - A rural history 1908-1978; Compiled and published by Hanna North Book Club, edited by Jean James 1978; printed by Robins Southern Printing Ltd., 1233 - 2 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB
James or Jimmy, as he was well known, came over from Scotland in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, and took up a homestead near Corinne School. He lived with the John Wallace family and worked in the coal mine owned by T.A. Kane. Later he worked in another mine that was operated by Mr. Bradshaw.
In 1916, a lovely young Scottish lady by the name of Janet Wilkie came over from Scotland and landed in Hanna with no one there to meet her. She hired Mr. Dick Hannah to drive her to the Wallace farm to meet Jimmie, her future husband.
Having no building on his farm yet, they lived with the Wallaces for a short time, and were married a few days after she arrived in the new country that was to be her future home. I will always remember their Chivaree. While we were all banging the pans and plow shears, near me was Jimmie pounding on a dish pan, he looked around and said, "Chivaree her damn good boys."
They built a shack on their land and lived there for some time. Jimmie always worked in the mine. later they bought a quarter section North of Corinne School and lived there till they moved to Castor, where Jimmie continued to work in a coal mine till he retired and then was Night Clerk in the National Hotel for some time.
Of this marriage, there were three children: David, Janet and a baby who lived only a few years. David now lives in Red Willow near Stettler. Janet married Alex Mix, they live at Grand Forks, B.C. Janet and her husband had the misfortune to lose their home by fire, in which some of their children lost their lives.
Mr and Mrs. James Easton were a friendly couple and took part in the community affairs, he could sing the Scottish songs, which we all enjoyed very much.
Mrs. Frances Unsworth remembers when Miss Wilkie came to Canada to marry Jimmie Easton. She spent her first Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis of the Garden Plains district. Miss Wilkie had a nursing career in Scotland before coming to Canada. Her nursing profession was a great help to the people of this district.
One winter, Mr & Mrs. James Easton lived at the Three Star Mine, where she cooked for eight men and looked after her sick baby at the same time. Her husband worked in the mine. Mr. Bob Unsworth took Mrs. Easton and her sick baby to see the doctor, but the baby died in the car on the way to town. On different occasions Mrs. Easton was asked to accompany sick people on their way to see a doctor.
Mr. Easton passed away after they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Mrs. Easton moved into the Paintearth Lodge in Castor. She was noted for her handicraft which was just beautiful, doing this until her passing.

** To my knowledge, in the genealogy research, I have not found that Jennie (Janet Wilkie) had any formal nursing education, but perhaps being the youngest in her family, she helped out and had a natural love for this type of work. HWilliams

Immigrated to Canada, arriving at Garden Plains 1916
Dave (Son), thought maybe she came to Canada in 1910 and was married. NO

Moved to Castor soon after, and resided in a house one block from Main Street of Castor.

Jimmy and Jenny Easton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1960

Jenny was known for her correspondence with family back in Scotland, as well as her knitting, baking of shortbread. Jenny was always smiling, very happy woman and I recall visiting both she and Jimmy with my grandparents Dave and Annie Wilkie (Heather)

Jenny never returned to Scotland after immigrating to Canada.
