Newspaper Article: Dunfermline Journal January 30 1926 pg 5
    TWO CROSSGATES PEOPLE INJURED:
Two accidents involving injuries to two persons resident in Crossgates occurred last Saturday. In the early morning while an old residenter named Andrew Wilkie, Main Street, was procedding to Inverkeithing, he was knocked down by a motor car and sustained injuries to his head. He was removed home and medically attended to.***
Another accident with more serious results occurred in the evening. Thomas Sneddon, who is employed by the Co-operative Society at Dunfermline and who resides with his parents in Dunfermline Road, was proceeding home on the top of a train car from Dunfermline, when at a part of the road, hear the West of Fife Laundry, he was struck on the head by the trolley. After medical aid had been summoned, he was removed to Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital suffering from head injuries.
    ****
It seems Gt Grandfather Andrew never recovered from his accident and within 2 weeks was hospitalized and died. I have been told he was walking to the Fair or Garden Fair at Inverkeithing as he was going to judge some of the competitions, but unfortunately the plan never came to fruition due to the accident.

I wonder if there were charges to the driver of the motor vehicle or was Gt Grampa in the wrong place at the wrong time. hw

    Extract from the Dundee Courier
"SECRETS OF THE ROUTE ACROSS FROZEN LOCH LEVEN"
Sir,- There has been a good deal about Loch Leven in "The Courier" in recent weeks; some of your readers may find the following story of interest.

I was a general practioner in Kirkcaldy for over 35 years. About 30 years ago I had as a patient an old man in his 80s, Charles Wilkie, who lived in the Raith Estate.

He had been a farm worker for most of his life and told this story about his first job.

Having left school (at the age of 12) he was working on a farm on the north side of Loch Leven.

One winter's morning, when the loch was frozen hard, he was told by the grieve to get his horse out and harnessed to the cart; the man did the same, and they then put four sheep into each cart. he was then told to follow closely and do exactly as the older man did.

Much to his surprise and alarm they drove down to the edge of the loch and struck out across the ice!

He was not at all happy about his. In fact he "took a good grip" on the two nearest sheep so that they would keep him up if the cart went down! However, after one or two slight changes of direction they arrived safely on the priory island and later repeated the trip to fetch more sheep.

It was only later that he was told that there was, in fact, little danger; the grieve steering by chruch towers and other landmarks in Kinross, across the loch, was following the line of an old causeway out to the island, presumably made by the monks, and had the horse and cart gone through the ice the horse's head and the body of the cart would still have been above water (though a rescue might have presented problems).

The instructions regarding the route had been carefully handed down in that farm (presumably Portmoak or Grahamstone), which had the right to put sheep on the island.

This incident probably happened just over 100 years ago. I believe the level of the loch was changed at the end of last century, when the dam and sluices were built, and the "new Cut" to Auchmuir Bridge made to drain the marshland East of the loch; so perhaps the causeway is now much deeper under water.

Dr. E. R. Lewtas Gregson, 51 Dundee Road, Perth"

** A son, named A. Wilkie, that I cannot find a birth registration for belonging to Wm Brown Wilkie & Mary Ann McGregor, I am wondering if this individual was Andrew Wilkie born to Andrew Wilkie & Mary Sharkey in 1902. Mary Sharkey died in 1903 and Andrew Wilkie died in 1907 but was with a Janet Laing - so perhaps Wm Brown Wilkie & Mary Ann McGregor adopted or raised him as their son.

Upon returning to Canada he worked in coal mines in the Garden Plains area - along with his Brother in Law Jimmy Easton. The owners of those mines were Bob Unsworth and Bradshaw Mines. Later he worked for Remillard Mines - by Halkirk area - the location where Grampa suffered his eye injury due to dynamite that didn't ignite immediately but sometime later, 'blew', injuring Grampa in the face - forcing him to have many months of care in Calgary and Castor Hospitals - resulting in his glass eye.

I am uncertain of the exact date, but when Grampa Dave was working for Remillard mines either in the late 1930s or early 1940s, dynamite was lit and everyone had cleared the respective area for the explosion to occur; nothing happened - several miners went up a ladder to check why - and then it was Grampa's turn to check as the expected explosion hadn't occurred. Just as he reached the area - the explosion occurred - resulting in serious injuries to him - the loss of his Left eye as well as pieces of coal debris embedded in his skin - which remained for the remainder of his life - there was no way of removing this without serious skin grafting - neither expertise nor money was available for this option. To complicate matters further, there was no insurance for the workers in these small mines and no compensation when accidents happened. Grampa was taken to the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary for treatments and a glass eye prosthesis. This exhausted his savings account and his Son Andy (my Dad) helped with the expenses. From that time onward, Grampa had a glass eye prosthesis - and again technology wasn't what it is today. The special type of glass used to come from Germany but during and after WWII, laboratories used another form of glass / plastics. It was not easy to insert the prosthesis into the orbit, cleanliness was required, both to the orbital cavity, the prosthesis as was lubrication. In the 21st century it is thought the life expectancy of a glass eye prosthesis is about 5 yrs - I wonder what it was back in the 1940s. Grampa never received any replacements - but used the first and only one he was given. He and our Father never returned to working in the mines following this accident.

Grampa found work in the local Pool Hall, working the tables, selling snacks and beverages as well as the cleaning of the establishment. He put in long hours - often 12 hour shifts on weekends & holidays - then a half-mile walk home after closing. Grampa never owned a car or drove a vehicle.

THE JAMES EASTON STORY - by Elechia Chidley
Source; Hanna North - A rural history 1908-1978; Compiled and published by Hanna North Book Club, edited by Jean James 1978; printed by Robins Southern Printing Ltd., 1233 - 2 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB
James or Jimmy, as he was well known, came over from Scotland in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, and took up a homestead near Corinne School. He lived with the John Wallace family and worked in the coal mine owned by T.A. Kane. Later he worked in another mine that was operated by Mr. Bradshaw.
In 1916, a lovely young Scottish lady by the name of Janet Wilkie came over from Scotland and landed in Hanna with no one there to meet her. She hired Mr. Dick Hannah to drive her to the Wallace farm to meet Jimmie, her future husband.
Having no building on his farm yet, they lived with the Wallaces for a short time, and were married a few days after she arrived in the new country that was to be her future home. I will always remember their Chivaree. While we were all banging the pans and plow shears, near me was Jimmie pounding on a dish pan, he looked around and said, "Chivaree her damn good boys."
They built a shack on their land and lived there for some time. Jimmie always worked in the mine. later they bought a quarter section North of Corinne School and lived there till they moved to Castor, where Jimmie continued to work in a coal mine till he retired and then was Night Clerk in the National Hotel for some time.
Of this marriage, there were three children: David, Janet and a baby who lived only a few years. David now lives in Red Willow near Stettler. Janet married Alex Mix, they live at Grand Forks, B.C. Janet and her husband had the misfortune to lose their home by fire, in which some of their children lost their lives.
Mr and Mrs. James Easton were a friendly couple and took part in the community affairs, he could sing the Scottish songs, which we all enjoyed very much.
Mrs. Frances Unsworth remembers when Miss Wilkie came to Canada to marry Jimmie Easton. She spent her first Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis of the Garden Plains district. Miss Wilkie had a nursing career in Scotland before coming to Canada. Her nursing profession was a great help to the people of this district.
One winter, Mr & Mrs. James Easton lived at the Three Star Mine, where she cooked for eight men and looked after her sick baby at the same time. Her husband worked in the mine. Mr. Bob Unsworth took Mrs. Easton and her sick baby to see the doctor, but the baby died in the car on the way to town. On different occasions Mrs. Easton was asked to accompany sick people on their way to see a doctor.
Mr. Easton passed away after they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Mrs. Easton moved into the Paintearth Lodge in Castor. She was noted for her handicraft which was just beautiful, doing this until her passing.

** To my knowledge, in the genealogy research, I have not found that Jennie (Janet Wilkie) had any formal nursing education, but perhaps being the youngest in her family, she helped out and had a natural love for this type of work. HWilliams

Immigrated to Canada, arriving at Garden Plains 1916
Dave (Son), thought maybe she came to Canada in 1910 and was married. NO

Moved to Castor soon after, and resided in a house one block from Main Street of Castor.

Jimmy and Jenny Easton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1960

Jenny was known for her correspondence with family back in Scotland, as well as her knitting, baking of shortbread. Jenny was always smiling, very happy woman and I recall visiting both she and Jimmy with my grandparents Dave and Annie Wilkie (Heather)

Jenny never returned to Scotland after immigrating to Canada.

Andrew Wilkie was a grievor (Foreman) at Gospetry Farm Cottages by
Milnathort. Andrew received a service award for raising horss for Queen Elizabeth II in 1972. I have a photo of the agricultural award that was presented to Andrew. We visited this farm on our first visit to Scotland in 1982; Andrew was deceased then but we did meet his wife Mary and son Charlie who were still living and working on the farm.

    Newspaper article: 1952
Train Hits Tractor at level crossing near Milnathort - 3 people hurt and 1 girl killed
Newspaper article states a dreadful accident that happened across the road from Gospetry Farm, where Andrew Wilkie was grieve. Mr Douglas B Clark was the owner of Gospetry farms at the time.
Andrew, age 56, suffered a dislocated shoulder and other injuries, is detained in Bridge of Earn Hospital
The driver, James Baldie, 23, managed to jump clear as did Adam Todd and his two sons Alex & Joseph, all of Gospetry. Cottages. Baldie's sister and the grieve were still in the trailer when the train engine hit it. It was a terrible impact. The tractor and trailer were mangled wrecks. A wheel was thrown 100 yards across a field. Normally the train crosses this area at noon, so the people were not expecting the train to arrive agter 1 pm. It is stated they didn't hear it coming.

According to a newspaper article written in 1988, Charlie Wilkie comments "My Father had been a prisoner of war after being wounded in the Great War - I still have his cap badge, postcards he sent while on service and many other momentos and I too wanted to serve my country .. But the authorities decided that I could contribute more by working the land."

Recollections of Aunt Jenny Mills as told to Heather in 1998.
As a child, Jenny lived with her family - Agnes and Andrew Morton, siblings John, Margaret and Agnes on a farm. Everyone worked doing farm labour for the owner of the farm. The owner's wife, Nessie took a real shine to Jenny. The farm was located at Forfal, no longer there now. Crops on the farm were oats, barley, rye , turnips and potatoes. Livestock included beef and dairy cows, pigs, and horses. They worked from sun up to sun down. Her mother worked in the potatoe and turnip fields.

Jenny attended a primary school and the only way there was to walk. She doesn't remember the name of the school or the distance involved from the farm. In the good weather they always walked barefoot. As mentioned above, Nessie took a liking to Jenny and often she was allowed to eat at their house, meet their company and play with their family. This lady often took Jenny on outings by train to Dunfermline and beyond. One particular time, while on this outing, a fearful thunder storm came and they couldn't get back to the train to return home. They slept overnight at the friends place but Aunt Jenny was too frightened to sleep alone, so Nessie had to have Jenny in bed with her. Jenny remembers waking up to the sound of horse hooves on the cobbled streets outside doing milk deliveries. She had never heard the clip clop before.

As she grew older she worked for awhile as the owners domestic maid at the 'big house'. Then she moved onto other work with 2 other larger families, finishing as the main chef for a well to do family. That is how she met Jimmie Mills as he was as asst. butcher and delivered meat to the place where she was working.

At 25 years of age, Jenny married James Mills. She quit her job to move back home and get ready for the wedding. Just prior to quitting her job, she was given a 10 pound tip by her boss's mother in law as her (Jenny's) food was always so good. This mother in law even offered to have Jenny work for her in the future if she wanted to change jobs. Jenny was unflappable, even on preparing for extra company on short notice. Her job had the responsibility of preparing, cooking all meals, foods for the people she worked for as well as supervising other kitchen help during peak activity times.

Jenny and Jimmy Mills were married in the village Hall which served as a church on Sundays. She doesn't remember how many guests came but most of her cousins, aunts / uncles, and friends attended. Her bridal attire was a white dress to her ankles and a small veil on her head. They had a lovely dinner, wedding cake, and then danced for hours. Music was accordian playing, dances were reels, lancers, and waltzes. The day before their wedding the weather was sunny and warm but January 9, 1924 was snowy and cold.

Jimmy and Jenny worked hard and Jimmie wanted to buy a butcher shop of his own. The fellow he was working for said "Don't go", I'll give you a shop to manage and pay you accordingly. This arrangement didn't work as Jimmies' pay didn't increase very much ( 17-20L per month) Then another fellow offered to go partners with Jimmy, so Jimmy went to his boss to resign - again his boss said "Don't go, I'll pay you 1/3 - 1/2 shop profits. Jimmy was excited, however again, one year later, the money never materialized, so he left.

Together with his savings, the money from a new silent partner and set up shop in Rosyth, Fife. After a few years, he wanted to be the sole owner, offered to buy his partner out. The partner took him to a lawyer and Jimmy paid 'hundreds' of pounds to dissolve the partnership. This took all their savings again plus some money loaned to them by Jenny's parents. Shortly after WWII broke out. Times were very tough - in payments, 0 profits and trying to please customers with ration books. Inspectors often came around to check the books, collect the ration coupons. After the war, they did gain and the business was a success. During the war years, Jenny worked along side Jimmy in the meat store, keeping the books, handling the ration coupons, cutting chops and generally serving the customers while Jimmy did all the butchering.

Nancy grew up an only child, very happy, but personality more like her fathers. They were / are a close family; always people coming and going in their home. Nancy worked in top military secrets work as a steno. Also taught typing at night schools to Polish underground men, other future employees for the war movement.

Both recall the fearful sirens. The first Scotland bombing was the Forth of Firth dockyards. Jenny and Jimmy were friends to many and helped many friends, neighbours during the war. Jimmy worked after hours as a "special policeman", checking that the black out blinds always shut - particularly in the maternity hospital. He had regular rounds to do daily with a variety of tasks assigned to them. Jenny and Jimmy had a bomb shelter in their back yard however often there was so little warning to always use it. Many mice there in the bombshell and Nancy, Jenny disliked this.

These same shipyards that were bombed during WWII have recently been closed by Parliament in London. Everyone (all Scotland) very upset as this dockyard was busier than 2 others that are being left open in England. It has left huge unemployment in the Dunfermline community.

After retirement, Jimmy Mills worked at the Abbey. He was like a caretaker to be there for visitors viewing, school childrens trips. His job was to provide security to the abbey as well as be an informant to the tours or visitors. King Robert the Bruce is buried under the pulpit here.

Other discussions this week commented on:
Jenny remembering when glass came into being, 1920
Stoves only used for cooking, and a small light but never heating. They always lived in a 2 room shack like house. Only 2 small windows later on. Jenny recalls the parafiin lamps and candles that were always used.

Andrew Morton was a right conservative and staunchly so, but Jimmy Mills was a liberal. Jenny remembers the males voting never the women.

As Jenny is very fond of the Dunfermline Abbey, her favorite tale is one that her father told her; carrying her just down the street where she now lives on their way to Jenny's baptism in the Abbey July 27, 1899. She just beams with that thought.

After the mine accident to Father - David Wilkie, neither of us worked in the mines again. I worked with Jim Lone at the Esso Bulk Station - unloading fuels from train cars to the tanks, as well as deliveries to the Farmers and locals who used fuel for heating purposes as well. Following Jim Lone's untimely death, Mrs Sybil Lone carried on - a huge disappointment to Dad (Andy) as he had hoped to take over that position. He also operated the Dray business (freight) from the CPR trains to various merchants of Castor and Mother - Hazel did the collections 1 - 2 x weekly.

Recollections by Andrew Wilkie for a book published by the community of Castor.
    Recorded by Kay Morasch.

My father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. David Wilkie, my sister Nettie, and I, left Scotland in 1911, arriving in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, where Father worked in the mines until May, 1914, when we returned to Scotland to try to improve my sister's health. War started in August, 1914, and we couldn't get back to Canada because Father was needed in the mines and had to stay. When he wasn't working in the mines, he was coaling the warship at the Naval Base, one of the things that they had to do.

In 1920 we came to Garden Plains, where Father's sister, Mrs Jim Easton (Jenny) was living, and where Uncle Jim was working in the mines there. We then moved to Castor, where Father and I worked in the Remillard mine until Father had an accident in 1921 and we both gave up that line of work.

I did odd jobs for awhile, then went to work for Imperial Oil and stayed with that for thirty years. Father and Mother lived to have their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Nettie died in 1925. Mrs Easton now lives in the Paintearth Lodge. Uncle Jim passed on.

After Father's accident, when we quit the mine, I worked for Mr. Pickles on the farm for two summers. In 1926 Hazel and I were married. She was working in Ramsden's store and I had spent one summer delivering groceries , that was how we met. We have had a good life. The Hungry Thirties were not very pleasant but we managed to get over that.

We have two good boys and a good girl. Allan, the oldest, joined the Air Force in 1950. He'll be due to retire in about two and a half years. Heather has her R.N.; Richard, our middle, is an electrician - got his papers a month ago. We are all very happy about that.

What wages did we earn in the mine? That is a hard question to answer because you were getting paid a certain amount a ton for mining it. But I worked on the farm for $30.00 a month at Bulwark, and worked that summer in town, delivering groceries for $30.00 a month, just to have a job. It was a big lift when I started getting $90.00 a month, but that dropped considerably in the Dirty Thirties.

What mines were operating in your time?
Well, there was Shaw's, Remillard's, Phillips', McCormick's and there was one west of the County Shop on that land of Nichols'. They said that there was very good coal there, but I never worked there myself. And there was Jack Armstong's and that one across the Highlevel bridge, over there by Fletcher's buildings that was operated by Alfred McNeil who used to have the Boarding House in Castor. He was elevator agent at Veldt, too, for awhile.

Would you name some of the men you worked with?
I have a picture here. This is my Uncle Bill Scott, this is Omar Remillard, here's Edson Miller, Tim Miller's uncle. And of course the wee chap with the curly hair is me. This is Ray Trost, and this is my Dad, this is Mr. Jasper, and this is my cousin Bob. And this one, I am not sure of , but I believe it is Gus Wetter. Gus worked there.

How could you see without electricity?
We had carbide lamps. If you want to go into Ray Meyer's barber shop, he has one he will show you. You screw off the bottom and fill it half full of carbide, the rest water. Then turn the little lever at the top and the water starts to drop. And out comes air, just like gas. There is a flint on it - just like a cigarette lighter, and there's a flame that comes out of there.

What were some of the dangers of working in a mine?
Very few. I never saw a real accident until Dad had his. Cut and bruised fingers were common, just as in any other work. But in the explosion, Dad lost his eye, and the coal dust was embedded in his skin, that is, on his face, and it was impossible to get it out. His skin pebbled over, and never returned to normal, and his face looked dark. It was something that no one had ever seen around here.

How did the mines here compare with those in Scotland?

No comparison. The mines here were, at the most, thirty or forty feet deep. Both mines used props. The props here were wooden, and approximately five foot. The mines that I worked in , in Scotland, were 250 fathoms straight down, and that is a six-foot fathom. When you reached the bottom, you went into work, then you would start to climb to the coal face that had all been worked out until you came to where they were digging out the coal.

There was a long seam of coal where you worked, a man and a boy like myself would work every ten feet along. The coal was cut with a machine, during the night or in the afternoon. There would be a man down there who would bore a hole, pile it with dynamite and blow that down. When the man & the boy would come in at six o clock in the morning, they would clean all this coal out. It would go down the incline and go out to the bottoom as we called it. It would go out the shaft to the top. This incline was steep enough that the full coal cars going down would bring up the empties. And from there a pony would pull them up to the shaft. The ponies would get up to the top once a year and would be practically blind from having been down there for so long. When I started to work it was in 1915-16, and there was no light except for the carbide lamps.

When you worked on the mining crew, you were down in the hole for eight hours, and you didn't get out until your hours were up. You took your lunch with you in a tin can, for if you didn't , you wouldn't have any, because the rats would have it all eaten.

Dtr Louise (widowed) is currently living with her and was going to move into her own apt. when her Mom's illness happened, thus moving plans are delayed.

Received word today from Davie Easton, that his sister Janet passed away early this morning at 3:30 (in hospital in Grand Forks).
Louise, (Janet's dtr) had taken a flu bug and been ill for several days, then Janet got it, was taken to Hosp. Friday night and retd. home after 4-6 hours, then retd to hospital by 4 am, Saturday April 29. She was alert and knew her family right to the end.

I telephoned Dave at the above address and we had a lengthy chat, 2000

Continue to stay in touch with Dave & Mae Easton 2009

2010 - Mae passed away - funeral to be later when weather warmer

Saw Dave at Castor 100 yr homecoming. We included photos from Parents and siblings, as well as Dave & Annie Wilkie, and
Andy & Hazel Wilkie. Great homecoming - the long weekend was most enjoyable and great to see Castor

2011 - Dave called me to say the final court case involving his Son "Bussie" was finalized and Bussie was sentenced to 2 yr at Spy Hill Jail, Calgary. I know very few details of the accident but do remember hearing one of the accident victims had to have their leg amputated as a result of the injuries. No loss of life, but certainly life altering changes to some individuals.

Feb 26, 2011 - Telephoned Dave - we chatted about many things but mainly about his Son Bussie in Spy Hill Jail. Apparently the appeal papers have been submitted, Bussie is using Legal Aide help from Calgary in addition to his lawyer in Red Deer. I asked Dave to review the accident - and he says his Son was driving the 'big truck' & 'trailor" unit - approaching 56th (Stettler), he checked traffic, saw one vehicle distance away and nothing in the other direction; when he came to the intersection, he did a 'rolling stop' and again felt he had time to cross. That wasn't the case. The van and the truck unit collided - resulting in serious injuries to people in the van. Dave is vehement there wasn't any alcholol involved. Court actions at the time resulted in the 'loss of Bussie's drivers license, thus he was unable to keep working, loss of income to him personally but he also helped his parents Dave & Mae with house payments as Bussie stayed with them when not on the road trucking. Bussie obviously required legal / lawyer help - so bills were mounting, ultimately resulting in the jail sentence. Dave at this time doesn't know if he will be able to maintain living in his home in Stettler as it is mortgaged - he only has his Old Age Pension and with Mae deceased, no income from her now either. A couple of nights prior to the truck incident, Bussie was driving a friend out to Gas Plant to drop off some keys, on the way back to Stettler, they hit a deer - severely damaged the car, but no injuries to the passengers. Pushed car onto driveway area but police kept phoning him to remove the vehicle from the road. Dave again intervened and arranged for a tow truck etc.

2018 - Dave Easton moved from Stettler to Castor - In Seniors Living Manor, Enjoying the company very much

Charlie also worked on the same farm as his father Andrew -
Gospentry Farm Cottages. He, like his father, received a recognition award in the agricultural line for his farming skills.

Charlie never married. After his fathers' death, he remained at Gospentry and continued to look after his mother, who was a Type I diabetic. After his mothers' death, he took a long holiday to Australia.

Charlie died suddenly about 1991 and Aunt Jenny Mills wasn't notified so doesn't know too many details. He used to visit them regularly but upon his death there was no one who would notify the Mills family - Aunt Jenny and Nancy. They noticed a short clipping in the newspaper.

    EXTRACT FROM NEWSPAPER 1988
    OFF AFTER 51 YEARS
Charlie Wilkie knows every square inch of Gospentry Farm like the back of his hand - but he should, having worked the land west of Milnathort for no fewer than 51 years.
Yesterday, however, Charlie (65) retired with plans of discovering a new land.
"Later this year I hope to go to see relatives in Australia," he said after being presented with a wallet and notes by farmer Stanley Bayne of the well-known Fife bakery chain.
"It has long been an ambition of mine to go to see the three cousins I have never met before," he said. Charlie has lived in the same cottage all his life, his late father Andrew being grieve at the farm on the northern most tip of Fife.
On leaving Auchtermuchty primary School in 1937, he immediatley began working with the farm's cattle herds - filling almost every job over the years, including ploughman and tractorman.
"I have turned my hand to everything," he continued, "and have loved every minute of it. My favorite moments involved working with the Clydesdale horses which used to do many of the tasks before the days of tractors".
Charlie was excused war duties because of his work in agriculture, but it did not prevent him trying to join up. "My friend and I went over to volunteer in Dundee," he said, "but we were turned down because of our work with the farm.
"My father had been a prisoner of war after being wounded in the Great War - I still have his cap badge, postcards he sent while on service and many other memontoes - and I too wanted to serve my country.
"But the authorities decided that I could contribute more by working the land. "Instead I did serve with the Home Guard in Milnathort."

Charlie is well-known in local horticultural circles for his success with both vegetables and flowers. "I must admit I have won a few cups over the years for my efforts," he added.
"When I come back from Australia I hope to spend more time in my garden."

Will the long flight pose any problems to someone so used to life in the wide open spaces of the Fife countryside?
"The only time I have ever flown before was on a pleasure flight during a holiday in Blackpool many years ago," said Charlie, "but I am quite looking forward to the new challenge of flying halfway round the world in one go."
Picture shows Charlie (right) receiving his gift from Mr. Bayne.

August 2014 - Visit with First Cousin Daniel (Danny) Strome

Danny was telling me he could remember his first drink of Scotch - he was abt 17 and was helping Richard with his paper route. They had finished delivering papers, decided to stop in and visit Grampa Dave Wilkie
In some way, the topic of Scotch was talked about and Grampa Dave offered them both some Scotch - Richard asked for mix in his and Grampa Dave replied " If you are going to drink a man's drink then you must act like a man and bottoms up"
To this day, Danny really enjoys a Single Malt scotch - no water, ice or mix. I, Heather, share his sentiments - no mix or water in mine either

    OBITUARY:
    RICHARD WILKIE
    Castor plane crash kills businessman.
A funeral service will be held here, tentatively on Friday for Richard Wilkie, 42 of Castor, who was found dead Tuesday afternoon in the wreckage of his light plane after being reported overdue on a flight to Castor from Edmonton.
A Twin Otter 440 search aircraft from CFB Edmonton, found the plane at 3:15 near Heisler, about 50 km. N. of Castor.
Search director Capt. Keith Hummel said Mr. Wilkie was alone on the plane, which left Edmonton Municipal airport about 12:30 am Tuesday for the 50 min. flight to Castor.
Capt. Hummel said there was no indication at the site of the cause of the crash. The aircraft went down in flat, farming terrain, mixed with patches of trees. 2 search and rescue aircraft put in about 16 hours of flying time said Capt. Hummel.
Mr. Wilkie was piloting his Cessna 182, returning from a business trip to Edmonton for his firm E&R Electric Ltd., of Castor.
Capt. Hummel said the federal transport dept. will investigate the crash.
Officials notified Mrs. Wilkie at about 5 am Tuesday that her husbands' plane was missing. Earlier at about 2 am, she received a phone call asking for her husband. Peggy knew it was the airport phoning - said a family member.
The wreck was spotted about 15 hours after takeoff. Mr. Wilkie was a pilot for 7 years. Survivors include his wife Margaret Rose, daughters Janice - 17 and Jacqueling - 16 of Castor. Services held at Community Centre February 27, 1981.
